The Patriot League is a collegiate athletic conference comprising private institutions of higher education and two United States service academies based in the Northeastern United States. Outside the Ivy League, it is among the most selective groups of higher education institutions in the NCAA, and has a very high student-athlete graduation rate for both the NCAA graduation success rate and the federal graduation rate.
The Patriot League men's basketball tournament is held at the conclusion of each regular season. The winner of the tournament is awarded an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship.
The Loyola Greyhounds men's basketball team represents Loyola University Maryland in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I competition. They are currently led by third-year head coach Tavaras Hardy. It became a member of the Patriot League along with the university's other intercollegiate athletic programs on July 1, 2013. Home matches are played at Reitz Arena.
The 2008 Patriot League men's basketball tournament, a part of the 2007-08 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, took place March 5, 2008, as a single-elimination tournament, with games being played at the higher seeds' home courts. The American University Eagles won the league's regular season, and received the number one seed in the tournament. They kept their home advantage throughout the tournament and defeated Colgate, 52–46, on March 14, 2008, to win the conference tournament and received the Patriot League's automatic bid for the 2008 NCAA tournament.
The Patriot League women's basketball tournament is the annual conference women's basketball championship tournament for the NCAA Division I Patriot League. The tournament has been held annually since 1991. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records.
The 2009 Patriot League men's basketball tournament, a part of the 2008-09 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, took place March 4, 2009, as a single-elimination tournament, with games being played at the higher seeds' home courts. The American University Eagles won the league's regular season, and received the number one seed in the tournament. The higher seed in each match-up was the host team for each game. The Eagles became the seventh team to repeat as Patriot League champions when they beat the second seeded Holy Cross Crusaders 73–57 in the championship game, which was broadcast live on ESPN2.
The Holy Cross Crusaders are the athletic teams representing the College of the Holy Cross. They primarily compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Patriot League. In ice hockey, a sport not sponsored by the Patriot League for either sex, the Crusaders are members of two other leagues, with men competing in the Atlantic Hockey Association and women in Hockey East. The men's rowing team is part of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges. Of its 25 varsity teams, Holy Cross supports 12 men's and 13 women's sports, giving Holy Cross the largest ratio of teams-per-enrollment in the country. Holy Cross's athletic teams for both men and women are known as the Crusaders.
The Lehigh Mountain Hawks men's basketball team represents Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in NCAA Division I competition. They have competed in the Patriot League since the circuit became an all-sport conference in 1990. After ending its independent status in 1974, they were a member of the East Coast Conference until 1990. Lehigh made their first NCAA Division I tournament in 1985, doing so by winning the conference tournament. With a 12-18 record, they became the first team to reach the Tournament with a record below .500. Its home games are played at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks made their fifth appearance in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 2012. The Mountain Hawks are currently coached by Dr. Brett Reed.
Michael Richard Brennan is a college basketball head coach who most recently served as head coach of American University and former professional European basketball player who played for teams in Germany, Belgium and Portugal. He previously served as an assistant coach for Columbia University, Georgetown University, Princeton University and American University. Brennan also holds an Irish passport.
The 2013–14 Boston University Terriers men's basketball team represented Boston University during the 2013–14 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Terriers, led by third year head coach Joe Jones, played their home games at Agganis Arena, with early season games at Case Gym, and were first year members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 24–11, 15–3 in Patriot League play to win the Patriot League regular season championship. They advanced to the championship game of the Patriot League tournament where they lost to American. As a regular season league champion who failed to win their league tournament, they received an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament where they lost in the first round to Illinois.
The 2013–14 Lehigh Mountain Hawks men's basketball team represented Lehigh University during the 2013–14 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Mountain Hawks, led by seventh year head coach Brett Reed, played their home games at Stabler Arena and were members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 14–18, 7–11 in Patriot League play to finish in sixth place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League tournament to Holy Cross.
The 2013–14 Bucknell Bison men's basketball team represented Bucknell University during the 2013–14 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bison, led by sixth year head coach Dave Paulsen, played their home games at Sojka Pavilion and were members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 16–14, 11–7 in Patriot League play to finish in fourth place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League tournament to Army.
The 2013–14 Holy Cross Crusaders men's basketball team represented the College of the Holy Cross during the 2013–14 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Crusaders, led by fourth year head coach Milan Brown, played their home games at the Hart Center and were members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 20–14, 12–6 in Patriot League play to finish in third place. They advanced to the semifinals of the Patriot League tournament where they lost to American. They were invited to the CollegeInsdiers.com Tournament where they defeated Brown in the first round before losing to Yale in the second round.
The 2014 Patriot League men's basketball tournament was held March 3, 5, 8 and 12 at campus sites of the higher seed. The winner of the tournament received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The 2016–17 Bucknell Bison men's basketball team represented Bucknell University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bison, led by second-year head coach Nathan Davis, played their home games at Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania as members of the Patriot League. They finished the regular season 23–8, 15–3 in Patriot League play to win the regular season championship, their third straight title and sixth in seven years. As the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League tournament, they defeated Army, Navy, and Lehigh to win the tournament championship. As a result, the Bison received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 13 seed in the West region. There they lost in the first round to West Virginia.
The 2017–18 Bucknell Bison men's basketball team represented Bucknell University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bison, led by third-year head coach Nathan Davis, played their home games at Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania as members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 25–10, 16–2 in Patriot League to win the Patriot League regular season championship. They defeated Loyola (MD), Boston University, and Colgate to win the Patriot League tournament championship. As a result, they received the Patriot League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the first round to Michigan State.
The 2019 Patriot League men's basketball tournament was the postseason tournament for the Patriot League during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. It was held on March 5, 7, 10, and 13, with the higher seed in each match up hosting at their respective campus sites. No. 1 seed Colgate defeated Bucknell 94–80 in the championship game to win the conference tournament championship, and the conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA tournament. It was Colgate's first Patriot League tournament championship since 1996, and third overall.
The 2020 Patriot League men's basketball tournament was the postseason tournament for the Patriot League during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. It was held on March 3, 5, 8, and 11, with the higher seed in each match up hosting at their respective campus sites. No. 3 seed Boston University defeated Colgate 64–61 in the championship game to win the conference tournament championship and the conference's automatic bid to the 2020 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. The NCAA Tournament would be subsequently canceled in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The Patriot League was the final conference to hold its championship game before all others remaining were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2021 Patriot League men's basketball tournament was the conference postseason tournament for the Patriot League. The tournament was held March 3, 6, 10, and 14, 2021 at campus sites of the higher seeds. The winner received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The 2022 Patriot League men's basketball tournament was the conference postseason tournament for the Patriot League. The tournament was held on four dates during March 2022 at campus sites of the higher seeds. The winner, Colgate, received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
