The BBC Women's Footballer of the Year is an annual award given to the best women's footballer of the year. Finalists are shortlisted by an expert panel made up of current and former professional players, coaches, administrators, journalists, and experts. The winner is decided by fan voting from all around the world.

She has previously played for Sunderland, Everton, Liverpool, Lyon and Manchester City as well as North Carolina at college level in the United States and Great Britain at the Olympics. Bronze has won three UEFA Women's Champions League titles with Lyon and one with Barcelona. She has also won three FA Women's Super League titles, with Liverpool and Manchester City. With England, she won the UEFA Women's Euro 2022.

Awarded annually by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the main award honours an individual's British sporting achievement over the past year, with the winner selected by public vote from a ten-person shortlist. Lewis Hamilton won the main award.

A creative and prolific forward, she has all-time most assists and all-time second-most goal contributions in the WSL. At UEFA Women's Euro 2022, she became the Golden Boot winner, Player of the Tournament, and top assist provider, leading England to win a major tournament for the first time. Later that year, she was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, becoming the first women's footballer to win the prestigious award; and finished runner-up for the Ballon d'Or and UEFA Player of the Year.

The Ballon d'Or Féminin, also known as the Women's Ballon d'Or, is a association football award presented by France Football that honours the player deemed to have performed the best over the previous season. It was first awarded in 2018, with Ada Hegerberg of Norway becoming the inaugural recipient of the award. Australian striker Sam Kerr and French defender Wendie Renard are the only players to have been nominated for the award every year since its inception. Sam Kerr is the only player to place in the top 20 nominations every year, and has consistently been in the top 7. In 2022, Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas became the first and only player to win the award twice and in consecutive years.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2020 took place on 20 December 2020 at the dock10 studios in Salford.
