Michoacán,formally Michoacán de Ocampo,officially the Estado Libre y Soberano de Michoacán de Ocampo,is one of the 31 states which,together with Mexico City,comprise the Federal Entities of Mexico. The state is divided into 113 municipalities and its capital city is Morelia. The city was named after JoséMaría Morelos,a native of the city and one of the main heroes of the Mexican War of Independence.

Ciudad Hidalgo,or simply Hidalgo,is a city and municipal seat of the Municipality of Hidalgo in the far northeast of the state of Michoacán,Mexico. It is a city located in a rural,mountainous area. Formerly,its name was Taximaroa,and it was the part of the Purépecha Empire closest to the Aztec Empire. This prompted two unsuccessful Aztec invasions as well as the first Spanish incursion into Purépecha lands in 1522. For both the city and rural communities around it,forestry and furniture making are important parts of the economy,but deforestation is forcing the area to look into alternatives such as tourism to take advantage of its natural resources and cultural sites.
Abies religiosa,the oyamel fir or sacred fir,is a fir native to the mountains of central and southern Mexico and western Guatemala. It grows at high elevations of 2,100–4,100 metres (6,900–13,500 ft) in cloud forests with cool,humid summers and dry winters in most of its habitat regime. In the state of Veracruz,it grows with precipitation all year long. The tree is resistant to regular winter snowfalls.
Aporo is a municipality in the Mexican state of Michoacán. The municipal seat is the town of Aporo. Most of the municipality is forested and considered to be part of Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve,where millions of monarch butterflies arrive to stay five months each winter. The town and municipality have mostly adobe structures with tile roofs and the main architectural site is the San Lucas Evangelista Church,which was built in the 20th century.

Melchor Ocampo was a Mexican lawyer,scientist,and politician. A mestizo and a radical liberal,he was fiercely anticlerical,perhaps an atheist,and his early writings against the Catholic Church in Mexico gained him a reputation as a leading liberal thinker. Ocampo has been considered the heir to JoséMaría Luis Mora,the premier liberal intellectual of the early republic. He served in the administration of Benito Juárez and negotiated a controversial agreement with the United States,the McLane-Ocampo Treaty. The Mexican state where his hometown of Maravatío is located was later renamed Michoacán de Ocampo in his honor.
Angangueo is a municipality located in far eastern Michoacán state in central Mexico noted for its history of mining and its location in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. The municipal seat is the Mineral de Angangueo. It is located in high rugged forested mountains,with the town in a small canyon.
The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a World Heritage Site containing most of the overwintering sites of the eastern population of the monarch butterfly. The reserve is located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests ecoregion on the border of Michoacán and State of Mexico,100 km,northwest of Mexico City. Millions of butterflies arrive in the reserve annually. Butterflies only inhabit a fraction of the 56,000 hectares of the reserve from October–March. The biosphere's mission is to protect the butterfly species and its habitat.
La Familia Michoacana,La Familia,is a Mexican drug cartel and organized crime syndicate based in the Mexican state of Michoacán. They are known to produce large amounts of methamphetamine in clandestine laboratories in Michoacan. Formerly allied to the Gulf Cartel—as part of Los Zetas—it split off in 2006. The cartel was founded by Carlos Rosales Mendoza,a close associate of Osiel Cárdenas. The second leader,Nazario Moreno González,known as El Más Loco,preached his organization's divine right to eliminate enemies. He carried a "bible" of his own sayings and insisted that his army of traffickers and hitmen avoid using the narcotics they produce and sell. Nazario Moreno's partners were Joséde Jesús Méndez Vargas,Servando Gómez Martínez and Enrique Plancarte Solís,each of whom has a bounty of $2 million for his capture,and were contesting the control of the organization.
Nazario Moreno González,commonly referred to by his alias El Chayo and/or El Más Loco,was a Mexican drug lord who headed La Familia Michoacana before heading the Knights Templar Cartel,a drug cartel headquartered in the state of Michoacán. He was one of Mexico's most-wanted drug lords.
Servando Gómez Martínez,commonly referred to by his alias La Tuta for once being a teacher,is a Mexican drug lord and former leader of the Knights Templar Cartel,a criminal organization based in the state of Michoacán. He is a former leader and founder member of La Familia Michoacana drug cartel,the split-off group of the Knights Templar. On February 27,2015,he was arrested by Mexican security forces in Morelia,Michoacán.
