The Institute for International Monetary Affairs, or IIMA, is a Tokyo-based economic research institute which provides information and policy recommendations on financial and monetary issues.

The IIMA was formed in 1995. Its founder, and current president, is Toyoo Gyohten, the former Bank of Tokyo Chairman.

The bubble was characterized by rapid acceleration of asset prices and overheated economic activity, as well as an uncontrolled money supply and credit expansion. More specifically, over-confidence and speculation regarding asset and stock prices were closely associated with excessive monetary easing policy at the time.
