The Kenya women's national rugby union team, popularly known as Lionesses are the Kenya Women's XVs Rugby Team, managed by Kenya Rugby Union. The Lionesses play in red jerseys with black shorts. The side first played in 2006 on the sixth of September and has represented Kenya in various tournaments ever since. The Lionesses currently rank 23rd in the World Rugby Rankings [1] and second in Africa.

History

Kenya were runners-up at the 2019 Rugby Africa Women's Cup which also doubled as a World Cup qualifying tournament. [2] Despite their loss, the Lionesses still advanced to a cross-regional repechage play-off against Colombia. [3] However, their last chances of qualifying were dashed with a narrow 15–16 loss to Colombia in Nairobi. [4]

The 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup will be the tenth edition of the women's Rugby World Cup, as organized by World Rugby. It is scheduled to be held in England.

WXV is a women's international rugby union competition that will be held annually, launched in 2023.The competition consists of three tiers, respectively named WXV 1, WXV 2, and WXV 3. Each tier consists of six teams divided into two pools and is run in a split pool format, where teams only face teams from the other pool.

The 2023 WXV was the first edition of WXV, a women's international rugby union group tournament for senior national teams organised by World Rugby, and took place between 13 October and 4 November. The competition featured three divisions of six nations each, evenly divided across two pools. Participating teams were determined by regional competitions and play-in matches. Wellington, Dunedin, and Auckland in New Zealand hosted the first-division WXV 1. Stellenbosch and Cape Town in South Africa hosted WXV 2, and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates hosted WXV 3.

The 2023 Rugby Africa Women's Cup is the third edition of the Rugby Africa Women's Cup. The 12 teams are split in 3 divisions that play a single round-robin. The composition of the divisions was decided according to the pool results of the 2022 edition. Division 1 will take place in Antananarivo and the winner and runner-up will classify for the inaugural edition of the WXV.

The Madagascar women's national rugby union team are a national sports team that represents Madagascar in women's international rugby union. They made their test debut against Kenya in 2019.

The 2023 WXV will be held in New Zealand, South Africa, and The United Arab Emirates from 13 October to 4 November 2023. Eighteen teams have qualified across three divisions.
