Leppävesi is the 65th (63.59 km²) largest lake of Finland in municipalities Jyväskylä, Laukaa and Toivakka. [1] It is quite narrow but long lake in direction south-north. It flows to Päijänne via Vaajavirta. It is part of Keitele Canal, waterway connecting Lake Keitele and Päijänne. National road 9 and Pieksämäki–Jyväskylä railway cross the lake.

These two lakes are connected to each other via River Muurame. All together there are 37 lakes in Muurame. Biggest lakes beside Päijänne are Muuratjärvi and Lake Kuusjärvi. River Muurame streams through the population center of Muurame. Muurame was founded in 1921.

Lake Päijänne

Lake Päijänne is the second largest lake in Finland. The lake drains into the Gulf of Finland via the Kymi River. The major islands are from north to south Vuoritsalo, Muuratsalo, Onkisalo, Judinsalo, Edessalo, Taivassalo, Haukkasalo, Vehkasalo, Mustassalo, Virmailansaari and Salonsaari. The largest island is Virmailansaari. The word saari means an island. Salo once meant a great island, nowadays it means a great forest area.

Saraavesi

Saraavesi is a medium-sized lake in Laukaa, Finland. It flows to lake Leppävesi via Kuhankoski rapids. The lake is part of Keitele Canal, a waterway connecting Lake Keitele and Päijänne. Saraakallio rock paintings are located on the shore of Saraavesi.

Jyväsjärvi

Lake Jyväsjärvi is a lake situated in the centre of Jyväskylä in Finland. The lake can be also considered as the Northern end of Lake Päijänne.

Säynätsalo Former Municipality in Central Finland, Finland

Säynätsalo is a former municipality in Finland and a part of Jyväskylä. As of November 2010 its population was 3,340. Säynätsalo municipality consisted of islands of Säynätsalo and Lehtisaari and also a part of Muuratsalo island. All of the islands are located on the Lake Päijänne. Also a small slice of land on the continent was part of the municipality.

Muuratsalo

Muuratsalo is an island in lake Päijänne, Finland. The northern part of the island belongs to Jyväskylä and the southern part to Muurame. It is located 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) south from the Jyväskylä city centre and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east from Muurame. There are 800 inhabitants in Muuratsalo. The Muuratsalo Experimental House by Alvar Aalto is located on the island. Elissa and Alvar Aalto discovered the place for this jewel of architecture while Säynätsalo Town Hall was under construction on the neighbouring island.

Vespuoli District of Jyväskylä in Western Finland, Finland

Vespuoli is a district in Jyväskylä, Finland. It is a part of Korpilahti, a municipality consolidated to Jyväskylä. It is located 35 kilometres (22 mi) from Jyväskylä city centre on the Eastern shores of lake Päijänne. The area is connected to Jyväskylä by a huge Kärkistensalmi bridge acrossing the lake Päijänne. The villages of Putkilahti and Oittila are located in Vespuoli. There were 532 permanent inhabitants and 797 summer cottages in Vespuoli as of 2009. At summer time the population of the area more than doubles.

Vaajakoski-Jyskä Ward of Jyväskylä in Western Finland, Finland

Vaajakoski-Jyskä is a ward of Jyväskylä, Finland. It is located seven kilometres from the city centre on both sides of Vaajavirta river on the Northern end of lake Päijänne and on the Western end of Lake Leppävesi. As of July 2011 the population of Vaajakoski-Jyskä was 14.588. Before 2009 Vaajakoski-Jyskä belonged to Jyväskylän maalaiskunta.

The Orivesi–Jyväskylä railway, also called the Jämsä railway is a 1,524 mm railway in Finland, running between the Orivesi and Jyväskylä stations.
