The Montenegro women's national volleyball team is the national team of Montenegro. It is governed by the Volleyball Federation of Montenegro and takes part in international volleyball competitions.

Contents

History

Period 2006–2016

Soon after the Montenegrin independence referendum, Volleyball Federation of Montenegro founded national teams. Women's team started to play in 2008, with the first match against Albania (3:0, friendly game).
Same year, Montenegro played its first games in official competitions – against Georgia in 2009 European Volleyball Championship qualifiers.
During the time, Montenegro played in qualifiers for European championship 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015. National team participated in qualifiers for 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championship, too.
In the period from 2006 to 2016, Montenegro didn't qualify for a European Championship or World Championship, but had significant results in 2013 and 2014 qualifiers.
At 2015, Montenegro participated at Games of the Small States of Europe, an event for states with less than million inhabitants. Montenegrin team won the gold medal, with four wins and sets score 12–0.

Period 2016–

On spring 2016, Montenegro women's team for the first time played in 2016 Women's European Volleyball League.
At the same time, the team started to play in qualifiers for European Championship 2017. Montenegro made score 2–1 in the first stage of qualifiers and participated on the final stage, but at the end, with the score 2–4, didn't succeed to qualify for their first big tournament.
In spring 2016, Montenegrin women's team played for the first time in European Volleyball League, finishing with score 2–4. Same score they made in European Volleyball League 2017.
In 2019, Montenegro once again won gold medal on the Games of Small States on Europe. From the other side, national team don't have success to qualify on European Championship in another three occasions - 2019, 2021 and 2023.

Competitive record

Until now, Montenegro never played on any major tournament. They participated in the qualifiers for European Championship (8 times) and World Championship (2 times). Montenegro played in European League, too (3 times). Biggest successes of the team were two gold medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe.

World Championship

Montenegro women's national volleyball team participated in the qualifiers for two World Championships (2014, 2018), but never played at main competition.

Montenegro women's national volleyball team played eight times in the qualifiers for European Championship (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023), but never played at main competition.

The winner of the Montenegrin First League starts the qualifications for the UEFA Champions League from the second round. The second and third placed teams and Montenegrin Cup winner play in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Conference League. The last placed team is directly relegated to the Montenegrin Second League, and the two next lowest ranked teams play in Montenegrin First League playoffs.

Serbia and Montenegro debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with the song "Lane moje" written by Leontina Vukomanović and Željko Joksimović. The song was performed by Željko Joksimović and the Ad-Hoc Orchestra. The union of public broadcasters of Serbia and Montenegro, Udruženje javnih radija i televizija (UJRT) organised the national final Evrop(j)esma 2004 in order to select the Serbia and Montenegro entry for the 2004 contest in Istanbul, Turkey. UJRT, the Serbian national broadcaster, Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), and the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) submitted a total of twenty-four entries to compete in the national final on 21 February 2004. "Lane moje" performed by Željko Joksimović was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from an eight-member jury panel and a public televote.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with the song "Igranka" written by Đorđe Miljenović, Dejan Dedović and Mario Đorđević. The song was performed by the duo Who See, which were internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2013 contest in Malmö, Sweden. Who See was announced as the Montenegrin representative on 20 December 2012, while their song, "Igranka", was presented to the public in a television special titled Who See Igranka on 14 March 2013.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Moj svijet" written by Sergej Ćetković and Emina Sandal. The song was performed by Sergej Ćetković, who was internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. Sergej Ćetković was announced as the Montenegrin representative on 19 November 2013, while his song, "Moj svijet", was presented to the public at a press conference on 9 March 2014.

The Montenegrin Volleyball League is the highest level of men's volleyball in Montenegro and it is organized by Montenegrin Volleyball Federation. In the Montenegrin Volleyball League currently competes 8 clubs.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "The Real Thing" written by Srđan Sekulović Skansi, Maro Market and Luka Vojvodić. The song was performed by the band Highway, which were internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Highway was announced as the Montenegrin representative on 2 October 2015, while their song, "The Real Thing", was presented to the public in a television special titled U susret Eurosongu on 4 March 2016.

Serbia and Montenegro originally planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006. The union of public broadcasters of Serbia and Montenegro, Udruženje javnih radija i televizija (UJRT) organised the national final Evropesma-Europjesma 2006 in order to select the Serbian and Montenegrin entry for the 2006 contest in Athens, Greece. The Serbian national broadcaster, Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), and the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) each submitted twelve entries from their respective selections Beovizija 2006 and Montevizija 2006 with twenty-four entries in total competing in the national final on 11 March 2006. The song "Moja ljubavi" written by Milan Perić and Dalibor Nedović performed by the band No Name, which had previously represented Serbia and Montenegro in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 where they placed seventh in the final with the song "Zauvijek moja", was initially selected as the winner following the combination of votes from an eight-member jury panel and a public televote. However the results were not recognized by UJRT due to controversy surrounding tactical voting of the Montenegrin jury, and the broadcaster ended up not submitting any entry.

The Montenegrin Women's Volley League, is the highest professional women's volleyball league in Montenegro. It is run by the Montenegrin Volleyball Federation.

The Montenegrin women's volleyball Cup is the national volleyball cup for women teams played in Montenegro. Inaugural season of Cup is held on season 2006–07, after the independence of Montenegro.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "Space" written by Adis Eminić, Iva Boršić and Momčilo Zeković. The song was performed by Slavko Kalezić, who was internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. Slavko Kalezić was announced as the Montenegrin representative on 29 December 2016, while his song, "Space", was presented to the public on 10 March 2017.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song "Heaven" written by Dejan Božović and Adis Eminić. The song was performed by the group D mol. The Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) organised the national final Montevizija 2019 in order to select the Montenegrin entry for the 2019 contest in Tel Aviv, Israel. Five entries competed in the national final on 9 February 2019 where the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. In the first round, the top two entries advanced to the superfinal following the combination of the votes of an international jury, a Montenegrin jury, a radio jury and public televoting. In the superfinal, "Heaven" performed by D-moll was selected as the winner entirely by a public televote, gaining 62% of the votes. The group was later renamed as D mol for the Eurovision Song Contest.
