Nauru initially planned to send a squad to the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games but withdrew due to undisclosed reasons. Eventually, it returned for the 2015 Pacific Games.

It is managed by the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) and represents the country in international 3x3 basketball competitions, including at the Pacific Games. The team won a silver medal at the 2017 Pacific Mini Games.

The men's and women's tournaments for 3x3 basketball were played at the 2019 Pacific Games on 18–20 July 2019 at the Faleata Sports Complex in Apia, Samoa. The 3x3 format of the game had been introduced to the Pacific Mini Games in 2017, but this was the first time it had been contested at the main Pacific Games.

The 2022 FIBA Women's Melanesia Basketball Cup was an international basketball tournament contested by national teams of Melanesia sub-zone of FIBA Oceania. The tournament was hosted by Fiji. Originally slated to be held in 2021, the schedule was pushed further to April 2022 due to COVID-19 pandemic, with exact dates has been set to October 26 to 29. Matches were played at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
