The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, which is made up of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for most sports; in football, it participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly referred to as Division I-AA.
The 2006–07 NCAA Division I men's basketball season began on November 7, 2006, progressed through the regular season and conference tournaments, and concluded with the 2007 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament championship game on April 2, 2007 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. The Florida Gators successfully defended their national championship with an 84–75 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Texas Southern Tigers represent Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, in intercollegiate athletics. They field sixteen teams including men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, and track and field; women's-only bowling, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball; and men's-only baseball and football. The Tigers compete in the NCAA Division I and are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The Texas Southern Tigers is the college football team representing Texas Southern University, a historically black university (HBCU) in Houston. The Tigers play in the NCAA's Division I FCS as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), a conference whose members are all HBCUs. In 2012, the Tigers moved into the new Shell Energy Stadium in East Downtown, built for the city's Major League Soccer team, the Houston Dynamo. The SWAC Championship Game, officially the Cricket Wireless SWAC Championship Game, is an American college football game that is held annually on the first Saturday in December by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to determine its football champion. The game pits the champion of the Eastern Division against the champion of the Western Division in a game that follows the conclusion of the regular season. From 2015 onward, the winner of the game has represented the SWAC in the Celebration Bowl. Currently, it is the only conference championship game conducted at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level. As of the 2019 season, the game is sponsored by Cricket Wireless.
Kevin Granger is a retired American professional basketball player who is best known for leading NCAA Division I in scoring with a 27.0 points per game average in 1995–96.

Terry Brooks is an American former basketball player known for his collegiate career at Alabama State University. A guard, Brooks played for the Hornets from 1985 to 1989. During his career he scored well over 2,000 career points, including Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)-leading 23.1 per game in 1987–88 and 24.6 per game in 1988–89. In those two seasons he scored 624 and 721 total points, respectively. As a junior he led the league in free throw percentage at 81.8%.
Kenny Sykes is an American high school basketball coach who is best known for his collegiate career at Grambling State University between 1992 and 1995. Sykes, a 6'4" shooting guard, was the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Newcomer of the Year and a second team all-conference selection as a sophomore in 1992–93. He averaged 23.9 points, 5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game that year. In Sykes' junior season he was once again named to the all-conference second team, this time behind averages of 21 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals. In 1994–95, his senior year, Sykes averaged a conference-leading 26.3 points per game as well as 4.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists. He was named the SWAC Player of the Year, becoming just the second player from Grambling State to earn the honor.

The Tigers, led by first-year head coach Donte Jackson, played their home games at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center in Grambling, Louisiana as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The 2017–18 Texas Southern Tigers basketball team represented Texas Southern University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Tigers, led by sixth-year head coach Mike Davis, played their home games at the Health and Physical Education Arena in Houston, Texas as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They finished the season 16–20, 12–6 in SWAC play to finish in a three-way tie for second place. Due to Grambling State's Academic Progress Rate violations and subsequent postseason ineligibility, they received the No. 3 seed in the SWAC tournament where they defeated Alabama State, Prairie View A&M and Arkansas–Pine Bluff to become SWAC Tournament champions. They received the SWAC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated North Carolina Central in the First Four before losing in the first round to Xavier.

They finished the season 17-9, 11-3 in SWAC Play to finish in 3rd place. They defeated Alcorn State, Jackson State, and Prairie View A&M to be champions of the SWAC tournament. They received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated Mount St Mary’s in the First Four before losing in the first round to Michigan.

The 2021 SWAC women's basketball tournament was a postseason women's basketball tournament taking place March 10–13, 2021. The tournament was held at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Jackson State received the Southwestern Athletic Conference's automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament.
