The men's 100 metre backstroke event at the 2004 Olympic Games was contested at the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece on August 15 and 16. [1]

U.S. swimmer Aaron Peirsol won a gold medal in this event, outside an Olympic record time of 54.06 seconds. Markus Rogan captured Austria's first ever medal in swimming after a hundred years, earning the silver at 54.35. Japan's Tomomi Morita, on the other hand, edged out defending Olympic champion and world record holder Lenny Krayzelburg to take a bronze by two hundredths of a second (0.02), breaking an Asian record time of 54.36 seconds. Sung Min is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. He represented South Korea in three editions of the Olympic Games, and held multiple national championship titles and swimming records in the relay freestyle and backstroke events. Sung had also won a total of five bronze medals, including one from the 50 m backstroke, at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, and at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

Pavlo Illichov is a Ukrainian former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. He won a silver medal in the 50 m backstroke at the 2001 European Junior Swimming Championships in Valletta, Malta (26.81). Illichov is a member of the swimming team for Dynamo Odessa, and is trained by his longtime coach and mentor Alla Timofeyeva.
