Uiduk University

Uiduk University is a private university located in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. It is situated between Pohang and Gyeongju, right outside of the village of Gangdong-myeon and a short distance away from the Yangdong Folk Village, (which is a UNESCO recognized heritage, a historical landmark, and) a Korean traditional neighborhood in Gyeongju.

Uiduk University has various undergraduate divisions and departments: Department of Buddhist Cultural Studies, Language Division (English, Japanese Language & Culture, Chinese), Division of Public Administration(Police Administration, Cyber Police & Security, Fire & Disaster Prevention), Division of Self-designed major, Department of Early Childhood Education, Division of Special Education(Elementary Special Education, Secondary Special Education) Department of Social Welfare, Department of Health, Department of Nursing, Department of Physical Therapy, Department of Business Management, Department of Airlines and Tourism, Division of Food Service Industry(Culinary Arts for Hotel & Restaurant, Professional Baking & Pastry Techniques, Food & Nutrition), Division of Physical Education (Sports and Leisure, Physical Dance) Division of Steel IT(Steel Convergence, Information Electronics, Software), Division of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Power Plant & Control System Engineering, Automotive Convergence, Division of Green Energy Engineering, Semiconductors & Electronics Engineering, New & Renewable Energy Engineering). On top of these Bachelor programs, this university offers graduate programs leading to either an M.A. and or a PhD in specific areas of study.

The university is owned and operated by the Jingkak Buddhist Order. It first opened its doors to its students and conducted classes on March 3, 1996. However, it celebrates its anniversary on October 18th, the opening day of the university. Although the university follows the principles of the Jingak Buddhist Order, its students may freely choose whether or not to learn about and embrace the Buddhist teachings offered.

This university offers a program of Korean language study to foreign students to learn the language as a prerequisite to regular enrollment in regular undergraduate courses. This foreign student program as well as the undergraduate programs have had students from various nations: Bangladesh, China, the Philippines, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, the United States, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

Many of these students are attracted to South Korea, because of its world standing in the entertainment, electronics, and semiconductor* industries. These students’ main goals have been to initially learn through the foreign student program the Korean language, traditions, and culture (all tied to the Buddhist teachings and atmosphere offered at Uiduk University and in the region it is located in), and then to join another technical department as a full-time undergraduate student.
