On January 9, 2021, 32-year-old Jason Nightengale shot and killed five people during a shooting spree that began on Chicago's South Side and ended in Evanston before being fatally shot by police. [1] [2] [3]

Events

Chicago shootings

Sometime before 1:50 PM, Nightengale fatally shot 30-year-old Yiran Fan as he sat in his vehicle in a parking garage in Hyde Park. [4]

Shortly after killing Fan, Nightengale enterted an apartment building at 4940 S. East End Ave. Here, he fatally shot doorwoman 46-year-old Aisha Johnson and wounded a 77-year-old-woman in the head as she grabbed her mail.

Next, Nightengale entered another apartment building in the 5500 block of South East End. Here, he stole a red Toyota from an unidentified man he knew. [5] He then drove to AK Food Mart convenience store at 9307 S. Halsted St, entered, and fatally shot 20-year-old Anthony Faulkner in the head and shot and injured a 81-year-old woman with wounds to the neck and back. [6] [7] Nightengale then jumped the counter and robbed the cash register before leaving.

At 4:00 PM, [8] Nightengale shot 15-year-old Damia Smith as she rode in the back seat of her mother's vehicle in the 10300 block of South Halsted Street. She would later succumbed to her wounds on February 2, 2021. [9]

At an unknown time, returned to the scene at AK Food Mart and fired shots at investigating officers. One round struck a police vehicle. No one was injured.

Evanston shootings and shooter's death

In Evanston, Nightengale fired a shot at a CVS Pharmacy at 101 Asbury Avenue, striking no one. Afterwards, he entered an IHOP and shot 61-year-old Marta Torres after allegedly taking her hostage. She died from her wounds 8 days later. [10] Afterwards, Nightengale fled the scene and was quickly pursued by Evanston Police officers. As he withdrew in the direction of a Dollar General, Nightengale was shot numerous times by officers. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. [11]

The gunman, 16-year-old Anthony Sincino, was a student at Blackville–Hilda High School who was suspended from school at the time of the shooting. He fatally shot one teacher and wounded another teacher before he committed suicide.

On July 7, 2011, a gunman killed seven people and wounded two others in a spree killing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The deaths took place in two homes, with the two non-fatal gunshot injuries taking place on the road. The suspected gunman, Rodrick Shonte Dantzler, later killed himself after a police chase which left his vehicle disabled in a highway woodline and after he then took hostages in a nearby house for several hours. Those killed included Dantzler's estranged wife, their daughter, his former girlfriend, and members of the other victims' families. One of the non-fatal victims was also acquainted with Dantzler.

On September 6, 2011, a mass shooting occurred in a branch of the IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, United States. A gunman, identified as 32-year-old Eduardo Sencion, killed four people, including three members of the National Guard, and wounded seven others before fatally shooting himself.

On June 7, 2013, a spree shooting occurred in Santa Monica, California. Its catalyst was a domestic dispute and subsequent fire at a home, followed by a series of shootings near and on the Santa Monica College campus. Six people were killed, including the suspect, and four injured. The shooter — 23-year-old John Zawahri — was killed by police officers when he exchanged gunfire with them at the Santa Monica College library.

The 2014 Montgomery County shootings were a killing spree that occurred in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States, on December 15, 2014. The killings began at about 3:30 a.m. A woman was found dead in Lower Salford Township, two others were found dead in Lansdale, and three more were found in Souderton along with a wounded teenage boy. Police identified the suspected killer as 35-year-old Bradley William Stone of Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, and the victims were his ex-wife and her family members. Most of the victims were shot, although some were also stabbed with a knife. After an extensive manhunt, Stone was found dead on the day after the killings in the woods near his home. He reportedly committed suicide by overdosing on several drugs.

On February 26, 2015, a gunman shot and killed seven people in several locations across the town of Tyrone, an unincorporated community approximately 95 miles east of Springfield, Missouri, United States. The gunman, identified as 36-year-old Joseph Jesse Aldridge, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound the next day. It was the worst mass murder in the history of Texas County, which previously had experienced an average of one homicide per year. It is also the deadliest mass shooting in Missouri.

The 2003 Ennis shooting occurred on June 14, 2003, when 44-year-old George Harold Davis opened fire on a group of people outside a bar in downtown Ennis, in Madison County, Montana, then engaged police officers in a high-speed chase and shootout. Davis killed one man and injured six other bystanders at the bar. He was then chased by a sheriff's deputy and highway patrol officer. The chase terminated on the Idaho/Montana state border. Davis was arrested and sentenced to eleven life terms, the longest prison sentence in Montana state history. The chase and shootout were captured on dashboard cameras installed within the two pursuing patrol vehicles.

On November 13–14, 2017, a series of shootings occurred in Rancho Tehama, an unincorporated community in Tehama County, California, U.S. The gunman, 44-year-old Kevin Janson Neal, died by suicide after a Corning police officer rammed and stopped his stolen vehicle. During the shooting spree, five people were killed and eighteen others were injured at eight separate crime scenes, including an elementary school. Ten people suffered bullet wounds and eight were cut by flying glass caused by the gunfire. The injured victims were transported to several area clinics and hospitals.

On January 10, 2001, a shooting spree took place in Nevada County, California when 40-year-old Scott Harlan Thorpe opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol killing three people and wounding three others in two separate shootings in the Nevada County area. The victims were 19-year-old Laura Wilcox, 68-year-old Pearlie Mae Feldman, and 24-year-old Mike Markle. The shooting spree led to the implementation of Laura's Law, a California state law that allows for court-ordered assisted outpatient treatment. The law was named after Laura Wilcox, one of the victims of the shooting spree. Michael Moore's 2002 documentary film Bowling for Columbine was dedicated to Wilcox's memory.

The murder of Zheng Shaoxiong occurred in Chicago, United States on November 9, 2021, when Dennis Zheng Shaoxiong, a 24-year-old graduate at the University of Chicago, was fatally shot by Alton Spann, a 19-year-old Chicago resident, on the sidewalk in the 900 block of East 54th Street in Hyde Park. Court documents say that when Spann saw Zheng, who was holding a large laptop, he and two others were driving a stolen car, and Spann used a gun to rob Zheng. The suspect shot the victim one time in the chest when the victim was struggling with the suspect and trying to escape. Zheng was pronounced dead after being taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. On November 12, Spann was charged with first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and armed robbery.

On September 7, 2022, three people were killed and three others were injured after a gunman went on a shooting spree in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. The attack was livestreamed on Facebook Live.

Alexander Hernandez is an American serial killer who murdered five people during a series of drive-by shootings in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area of California between March and August 2014. He targeted random people and dogs, murdering five people, injuring 11 others, and killing two dogs. He was later convicted of the crimes and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

On December 27, 2021, a mass shooting occurred in downtown Denver and later moved to Lakewood, Colorado, United States where 47-year-old Lyndon McLeod fatally shot five people and wounded two others. McLeod was fatally shot by Lakewood Police Agent Ashley Ferris, after the two exchanged gunfire.
