Dick Stellingwerf

Dirk Jacobus "Dick" Stellingwerf (born 23 May 1953 in Utrecht) is a Dutch politician of the Reformatory Political Federation (RPF) and his successor the ChristianUnion (ChristenUnie). He was an MP from 1994 to 2002. From 2008 to 2013 he was mayor of Lemsterland, and from 2015 to 2017 acting mayor of Schiermonnikoog.

Stellingwerf was a municipal councillor as well as an alderman of Ede, and a member of the provincial parliament of Gelderland.

He is a member of the Netherlands Reformed Churches.

Drèents is a collective term for Westphalian dialects spoken in Drenthe, a province of the Netherlands. They are spoken by about half of the population of the province.

A grietenij was a forerunner to the gemeente or municipality in Frisia, particularly in Friesland, and also in Groningen which are now a part of the Netherlands. From the end of the 16th century until 1851, there were a total of 30 grietenijen in Friesland. The term grietenij means the administrative district of a grietman. The term grietman means a man who greets. The grietenijen were found in the counties of Oostergo, Westergo and Zevenwouden. In the municipality law in 1851, the term grietenij was changed to gemeente or municipality, and the term grietman was changed to burgemeester or mayor. This resulted in consistent terms being used throughout the Netherlands.

Mayor of Virginia Beach

The mayor of Virginia Beach is the head of the municipal government in Virginia Beach, Virginia, which has a council-manager system of government. The mayor presides over city council meetings and serves as the ceremonial head and spokesperson of the city. The mayor is elected to a four-year term through direct election and the office has no term limits. These elections are nonpartisan, as are all municipal elections in Virginia Beach. Prior to 1988, the mayor was appointed from among city council members elected to represent the city's various boroughs.
