Kumyks Turkic ethnic group

Kumyks are a Turkic people living in the Kumyk plateau, the lands bordering the Caspian Sea, Northern Ossetia, Chechnya and the banks of the Terek river. They speak the Kumyk language, which until the 1930s had been the lingua-franca of the Northern Caucasus.

Ilyas Idrisovich Bekbulatov is a Russian-Uzbekistani freestyle wrestler of Kumyk ethnicity, who won the gold medal at the 2017 European Wrestling Championships. He also won bronze at the first 2015 European Games. Bekbulatov is a four-times Ivan Yarygin Grand-Prix winner. He was the first who beat American undefeated wrestler Brent Metcalf. He is International Master of Sports in freestyle wrestling.

Kumyk in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest

The participation of Kumyk in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest was originally planned to begin in Istanbul, Turkey, at the inaugural Bala Turkvision Song Contest in 2015. МKО "Qumuqlar" (MKOQ) was responsible for the selection process of their participant, for their debut in 2015. Karim Salavatov was selected as Kumyks first representative for the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015. However, they were forced to withdraw from the contest on 7 December 2015, due to the Russia–Turkey relations in the aftermath of the 2015 Russian Sukhoi Su-24 shootdown near the Syria–Turkey border on 24 November 2015.

Kumyk in the Turkvision Song Contest

Kumyk participated in the Turkvision Song Contest for the first time at the Turkvision Song Contest 2016, held in Istanbul, Turkey. Although they are not a country nor a region they are a Turkic ethnic group who do not have a defined region. They were originally going to make their debut at the 2015 contest but later withdrew due to the state of international relations between the Russia and Turkey.
