The Catholic University of Leuven or Louvain was founded in 1834 in Mechelen as the Catholic University of Belgium, and moved its seat to the town of Leuven in 1835, changing its name to Catholic University of Leuven. In 1968, it was split into two universities, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the Université catholique de Louvain, following tensions between the Dutch and French-speaking student bodies.
UCLouvain or Université catholique de Louvain is Belgium's largest French-speaking university. It is located in Louvain-la-Neuve, which was expressly built to house the university, and Brussels, Charleroi, Mons, Tournai and Namur. Since September 2018, the university has used the branding UCLouvain, replacing the acronym UCL, following a merger with Saint-Louis University, Brussels.
Bukavu is a city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), lying at the extreme south-western edge of Lake Kivu, west of Cyangugu in Rwanda, and separated from it by the outlet of the Ruzizi River. It is the capital of the South Kivu Province and as of 2012 it had an estimated population of 806,940.

Uvira is the capital city of the Uvira Territory in the South Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It is situated between Lake Tanganyika and the Mitumba Mountains and covers an area of approximately 16km.
The University of Kinshasa, commonly known as UNIKIN, is one of the three major universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, together with the University of Kisangani and University of Lubumbashi. Originally founded in 1954 as Lovanium University during Belgian colonial rule, the current university was established following the division of the National University of Zaire (UNAZA) in 1981. It is located in Kinshasa.
The University of Lubumbashi, also known by the acronym UNILU, is one of the largest universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located in Lubumbashi in Haut-Katanga Province, previously Katanga Province. The campus is located in the northern part of the city, west of the airport.
The Vodacom Ligue 1 is the top division of the Congolese Association Football Federation, the governing body of football in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was created in 1958. In 2013, the highest attendance was set in the match DC Motema Pembe - AS Vita Club, which saw an attendance of 80,000 football fans at Stade des Martyrs. TP Mazembe is the most successful club with 19 titles.
Bushi is mainly a traditional region and an African ethnic group in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo ; mainly located in the South Kivu province. It lies along the Mitumba Mountains and includes the administrative territories of Walungu, Kabare, Kalehe, Mwenga, Idjwi and Uvira surrounding Bukavu, which is its main city. There are about 7-12 million inhabitants in the region speaking the Mashi or Shi language. The Bushi is also a kingdom that is organized into many localities or sub-chiefdoms.
Lovanium University was a Catholic Jesuit university in Kinshasa in the Belgian Congo. The university was established in 1954 on the Kimwenza plateau, near Kinshasa. The university continued to function after independence until it was merged into the National University of Zaire in 1971. It can be considered an antecedent of the University of Kinshasa.
Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologist and Pentecostal pastor. He founded and works in Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he specializes in the treatment of women who have been raped by armed rebels. In 2018, Mukwege and Iraqi Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict".
The Progressive Congolese Students was a Zairean student political movement active in exile. Its main centre of activity was Belgium, particularly Université catholique de Louvain based in Louvain-la-Neuve. Politically, it had a Lumumbist orientation. It had relations with the Progressive Reform Party. The ECP was frequently plagued by infiltrations by agents of the Mobutist regime. ECP published a magazine entitled Congo-Libération.
The Our Lady of Peace Cathedral or simply Cathedral of Bukavu, is a religious building of the Catholic Church which is located in the city of Bukavu in the east end of the African country of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, specifically in the province of South Kivu.
Jean-Claude Willame is a Belgian professor emeritus specialised in the political history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He obtained his PhD in political science at the University of California, Berkeley in 1971. He was a professor at the Université nationale du Zaïre from 1971 to 1975. In 1989, he was the deputy director of the Centre d'études et de documentation africaines (CEDAF), which developed into the contemporary history section at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. He retired as a professor at the UCLouvain Faculty of Economic, Social and Political Sciences and Communication at the Université Catholique de Louvain. As an independent expert within the Coimbra Group, Willame went to Congo-Kinshasa and Congo-Brazzaville to study opportunities of cooperation between the European Union and ACP countries.
The Catholic University of Bukavu is a private university in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a member of the AUF.
The Société Minière et Industrielle du Kivu (Sominki) was a privately held mining company of Zaire. It operated gold and tin mines, mostly in South Kivu province, between 1974 and 1997. The acquisition of its mining assets by Banro Corporation of Canada was complicated by the First Congo War in 1996–1997, followed by expropriation of the mines by the new Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) government. Eventually Banro gained the right to exploit the gold mines.
Kaniola Groupement, also known as Kanyola, is one of the 16 groupements (groupings) that constitute the Ngweshe Chiefdom of the Shi people. Kaniola Groupement is located at an elevation of 1800 meters and is situated 64 km from Bukavu city. It shares borders with the Kahuzi-Biéga National Park and the Nindja Chiefdom to the northeast, while being bordered by the Izege groupement and Walungu groupement to the east. It is also bordered by the Burhale groupement and Mulamba groupement in the west.
The Université Pédagogique Nationale (UPN), formerly known as the Institut Pédagogique National (IPN), and also referred to as the National Pedagogical University, is a public institution of higher education with the mission of training and enhancing the skills of teachers, as well as promoting studies and research in the field of applied pedagogy. Situated in the Ngaliema commune of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the university is headed by Professor Masanga Maponda Anastasie. Established in 1961, it is the first pedagogical university in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
