The 2012 Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas, the seventh edition of the game, was a post-season American college football bowl game held on December 28, 2012 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas as part of the 2012-13 NCAA football bowl season. The game, which was the final game of the 2012 NCAA Division I FBS football season for both teams, was broadcast at 8 PM CT on ESPN, and featured the Minnesota Golden Gophers from the Big Ten Conference against the Texas Tech Red Raiders from the Big 12 Conference. The Golden Gophers accepted their invitation after finishing the regular season at six-wins, six-losses, while the Red Raiders accepted their invitation following a campaign during which they totaled seven-wins, five-losses. [2] This was not the first time the Golden Gophers and Red Raiders met in a bowl game; the two teams had previously met in the 2006 Insight Bowl, with the Red Raiders winning 44–41 in overtime.

Minnesota

The Golden Gophers finished at the bottom of the Big Ten's Legends Division, only posting a 2–6 mark in conference play. However, because of their 6–6 record, the Golden Gophers were bowl eligible for the first time since 2009, accepting a bid to the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas their bid to the game, their first Meineke Car Care Bowl appearance.

Texas Tech

The Red Raiders finished in a tie for fifth place in the Big 12 at 4–5 in conference play, holding tiebreakers ahead of the TCU Horned Frogs and West Virginia Mountaineers but behind the Baylor Bears. Soon after Minnesota accepted their invitation, the Red Raiders did the same. Although this was also the Red Raiders' first appearance in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas, the Red Raiders played in three previous bowl games in Houston: the 1976 Bluebonnet Bowl, the 2000 Galleryfurniture.com Bowl, and the 2003 Houston Bowl.

The Red Raiders' passing attack was the second-best in the country, averaging 362 yards per game. [3]

Kliff Kingsbury American football player and coach (born 1979)

Kliff Timothy Kingsbury is an American football coach and former quarterback who is the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL). He was previously a collegiate football coach from 2008 to 2018, where he achieved recognition for his development of quarterback prospects. During his collegiate career, Kingsbury served as the offensive quality control coach for two-time Sammy Baugh Trophy winner Case Keenum at Houston, the offensive coordinator for Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, and the head coach for Sammy Baugh Trophy winner and future NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech. Kingsbury was named the head coach of the Cardinals in 2019, whom he led to the playoffs during the 2021 season.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders football program is a college football team that represents Texas Tech University. The team competes as a member of the Big 12 Conference, which is a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The program began in 1925 and has an overall winning record, including a total of 11 conference titles and one division title. On November 8, 2021, Joey McGuire was hired as the team's 17th head football coach, replacing Matt Wells, who was fired in the middle of the 2021 season. Home games are played at Cody Campbell Field in Lubbock, Texas.

2006 Insight Bowl Annual NCAA football game

The 2006 Insight Bowl, a college football bowl game held on December 29 at Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, pitted the Texas Tech Red Raiders against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. This game is tied for the biggest comeback in NCAA Division I FBS bowl history. The Red Raiders, after falling behind 38–7 with 7:47 remaining in the third quarter, rallied to score 31 unanswered points to send the game to overtime. The Gophers scored a field goal in overtime, but the Red Raiders responded with a touchdown to win.

Graham Harrell American football player and coach (born 1985)

Graham Stanton Harrell is an American football coach and former quarterback who is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at West Virginia University. He previously served in the same role at the University of Southern California (USC). He had previously been an assistant for the Washington State Cougars and the North Texas Mean Green. He had also worked for Oklahoma State in a quality control position. He played college football at Texas Tech University, where he was an All-American quarterback, Heisman Trophy finalist in 2008, and set school, conference and national records for passing yards, attempts, completions, and touchdown passes. Harrell was signed into the National Football League in 2010 by the Green Bay Packers. He was a part of the Super Bowl XLV win with the Packers over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also a member the New York Jets. Prior to his time in the NFL, he was signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2009 as an undrafted free agent in the Canadian Football League.

Joe Esposito (basketball) American basketball coach

Joseph Esposito is an American basketball coach. With over thirty four years of college coaching experience Esposito is known as one of the best college basketball recruiters. Esposito is currently the Head Basketball Coach at Cesar Chavez High School and a Basketball Analyst on ESPN Las Vegas. Before that he was an assistant to head men's basketball coach Marvin Menzies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Esposito spent twelve years with Hall of Fame Coach Tubby Smith as an assistant basketball coach and Recruiting Coordinator at University of Memphis, an assistant coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Texas Tech University and the Director of Basketball Operations and Assistant Coach at the University of Minnesota. He was the Associate Head Coach at Tennessee State University working for Frankie Allen.

Jerry Kill American football player and coach (born 1961)

Gerald R. Kill is an American football coach. He is currently the head coach at New Mexico State University. He played college football at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas from 1979 to 1982. Kill served as the head coach at Saginaw Valley State University, Emporia State University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Northern Illinois University and the University of Minnesota, as well as serving as the interim head coach for the final 4 games of the 2021 season at TCU..

Chris Thomsen is an American football coach. He is the tight ends coach at Florida State University. Thomsen was the head coach of the Wildcats football program at Abilene Christian University (ACU), from 2005 through 2011. Thomsen also served as the interim head football coach at Texas Tech University for one game in 2012, the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas.

David Alexander Gibbs is an American football coach and former player. He was most recently the defensive coordinator for Texas Tech University, a position he held since January 2015. Gibbs previously served in a similar capacity at the University of Minnesota, Auburn University, and the University of Houston, as well as an assistant coach in the National Football League (NFL) for the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans.

The 2003 Houston Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game between the Navy Midshipmen and the Texas Tech Red Raiders on December 30, 2003, at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. It was the fourth time the Houston Bowl was played and the final game of the 2003 NCAA Division I FBS football season for both teams. Texas Tech defeated Navy 38–14.

Seth Doege American football player and coach (born 1988)

Seth Colton Doege is an American football coach and former quarterback, recently worked as a tight ends coach for USC. After playing college football for Texas Tech University, he was signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2013. On February 27, 2014, he was signed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Doege was Texas Tech's starting quarterback for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He was wide receivers coach for Bowling Green.

Art Kaufman is an American college football coach. He was the defensive coordinator for the California Golden Bears. He had been employed as the defensive coordinator for the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The 2012 Texas Tech Red Raiders football team represented Texas Tech University in the 2012 NCAA Division I FBS football season as members of the Big 12 Conference. Tommy Tuberville lead the Red Raiders in his third season as the program's fourteenth head coach. The Red Raiders played home games on the university's campus in Lubbock, Texas at Jones AT&T Stadium. They finished the season 8–5, 4–5 in Big 12 play to finish in a four way tie for fifth place. They were invited to the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas where they defeated Minnesota.

The 2012 Minnesota Golden Gophers football team represented the University of Minnesota in the 2012 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They were led by second-year head coach Jerry Kill and played their home games at TCF Bank Stadium. They were a member of the Legends Division of the Big Ten Conference. They finished the season 6–7, 2–6 in Big Ten play to finish in a tie for fifth place in the Legends Division. They were invited to the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas where they were defeated by Texas Tech.

The 2013 Texas Bowl is an American college football bowl game that was played on December 27, 2013 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. It was one of the 2013–14 bowl games that concluded the 2013 FBS football season. The eighth edition of the Texas Bowl, it featured the Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Big Ten Conference against the Syracuse Orange of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The game began at 5:00 p.m. CST and aired on ESPN.

The 2018 Quick Lane Bowl was a college football bowl game played on December 26, 2018, at Ford Field in Detroit. It was the fifth edition of the Quick Lane Bowl, and one of the 2018–19 bowl games concluding the 2018 FBS football season. The game was sponsored by Quick Lane tire and auto centers.
