The 2017 Dhaka RAB Camp suicide bombing was an attempted suicide attack in the under construction compound of the elite Rapid Action Battalion in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 17 March 2017. [1] The suicide attempt failed to cause any mass casualties, injuries or deaths. Only the lone suicide bomber died.

Background

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant had called for suicide attacks in Bangladesh on 15 March 2017. [2] Suicide attacks are rare in Bangladesh. [3]

Attack

On 17 March 2017 a suicide bomber the entered under-construction Rapid Action Battalion headquarters in Ashkona, Dhaka, Bangladesh and detonated his vest. [4] The suspected bomber was killed in the explosion and two RAB officers were injured. The injured officers, Lance Corporal Mizan and Constable Arif, were rushed to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital. The incident happened outside a makeshift camp located near the Haji Camp at Ashkona. The assault comes only two days after ISIL called for suicide attacks in Bangladesh, and one day after two militants of New JMB group blew themselves up to evade arrest by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit during a raid in Chittagong's Sitakunda. The attack happened at Bangladeshi Local time 1:10 P.M. in Uttara, Bangladesh. [2] [5] [6]

The attack followed what had been a lull in Islamist attacks in Bangladesh. [7] [8]

Another terrorist group, named Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami, was associated with JMB in executing the co-ordinated attack. Following the bombings, both groups were banned by the BNP Government of Bangladesh.

Rapid Action Battalion or RAB, is an anti-crime and anti-terrorism unit of the Bangladesh Police. This elite force consists of members of the Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Air Force, Bangladesh Police, Border Guard Bangladesh, and Bangladesh Ansar. It was formed on 26 March 2004 as RAT, and commenced operations on 14 April 2004.

Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh is a Bangladeshi politician and current Mayor of South Dhaka. He previously served as a Member of the Jatiya Sangsad for Dhaka-10 and Dhaka-12 from the Bangladesh Awami League.

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowd after a local football game in the village of al-Asriya, near Iskandariya in the Babil Governorate, in a mixed Sunni-Shiite area on 25 March 2016. The bombing killed at least 41 people and wounded more than 105. The Mayor Ahmed Shaker was among those killed in the explosion; he succumbed to his wounds in a hospital. The 2017 South Surma Upazila bombings was a combined police and army raid of a suspected militant hideout in South Surma Upazila, Sylhet, Bangladesh on 25 March 2017. During the raid, the militants targeted the Bangladesh Armed Forces who were surrounding the militant occupied compound in Sylhet. There were two suicide bombings which killed four civilians and two police officers and wounded more than 40, some critically. An army lieutenant colonel later died from his injuries. Bombs exploded and gunfire was reported when the military launched Operation Twilight to clear the militant hideout. ISIL claimed responsibility however, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal denied the claims of ISIL and blamed the local Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh for the attacks. Finally the Bangladesh Army neutralised four militants at the suspected hideout.
