The 2020 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held on 19 September 2020, in Edo State, and 10 October 2020, in Ondo State. The last regular gubernatorial elections for both states were in 2016. The All Progressives Congress' Rotimi Akeredolu was defending the Governor's office of Ondo while APC-turned-PDP Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki was defending his office. Both won reelection, leading to no net change in terms of overall party control of governorships. [1] [2]

Edo

One-term incumbent Godwin Obaseki switched from the APC to the PDP in 2020 [3] and sought re-election under the PDP banner; Obaseki won the PDP nomination [4] while former SSG and 2016 PDP gubernatorial nominee Osagie Ize-Iyamu became his main opponent by winning the APC nomination. [5] Obaseki won re-election, 57–42.

Ondo

One-term APC incumbent Rotimi Akeredolu sought re-election and won the APC nomination [6] while former Ondo Attorney-General Eyitayo Jegede won the PDP nomination [7] and Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi won the ZLP nomination after losing the PDP primary. [8] Akeredolu defeated Jegede and Ajayi, 51–34–12.

Oluwarotimi Odunayo AkeredoluSAN is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who is currently the Governor of Ondo State, in office since 24 February 2017. The All Progressives Congress (APC) is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Nigeria, along with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Founded on 6 February 2013 from a merger of Nigeria's three largest opposition parties, the party came to power following the victory of party candidate Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election. He was the National Vice-Chairman, South-South Zone, of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). He is the current APC gubernatorial candidate for the just concluded Edo gubernatorial election in Edo State. He lost to the incumbent governor, Obaseki.

Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki is a Nigerian politician and businessman who is currently the Governor of Edo State. He was first elected governor under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the year 2016 where He defeated Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the PDP and was sworned in as governor on 12 November 2016. Before becoming governor, he served as chairman of the Edo State Economic and Strategy Team inaugurated by former Governor Adams Oshiomole in March 2009.

Alfred Agboola Ajayi is a Nigerian politician, lawyer, and businessman. He is a former Deputy Governor of Ondo State and was elected into office on 26 November 2016 as running mate to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) under the All Progressive Congress (APC). He was succeeded by Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa following the victory of Governor Akeredolu in the 2020 Ondo State gubernatorial election.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Edo State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Edo State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
