On 29 October 2022, a Palestinian gunman affiliated with al-Qassam Brigades, the militant arm of Hamas, shot four people, killing one, in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba.

Attack

On 29 October 2022, Muhammad al-Jabari, a Palestinian resident of Hebron, entered the Givat Ha'avot area of the Kiryat Arba carrying an M16 rifle. 49-year old Israeli man Ronen Hanania was walking back to his car with his son (19 years old) holding grocery bags they had just gotten from a local convenience store, which was close to the Ashmoret checkpoint. As the Hananias began to unload their groceries, the gunman, who was hiding to the left or the vehicle, opened fire and fatally shot Ronen in the head and his son Daniel in the hand. The attacker then fled from the scene. [1]

Daniel Hanania waited for fifteen minutes for emergency services to come, then headed back to the store until security forces arrived to the scene with paramedics. As he exited the store the shooter reappeared and began shooting at the people outside the store. A Magen David Adom paramedic was seriously injured along with a Palestinian bystander. A security guard rammed into the attacker with a car, and the shooter was then killed by an off-duty officer. Ronen Hanania was transferred to the Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Karem, Jerusalem, where he died of his injuries. He was buried in the Har HaMenuchot cemetery of Jerusalem.[ citation needed ]

Perpetrator

The perpetrator was identified as Muhammed Kamel al-Jabari, a Palestinian elementary school teacher from Hebron. Jabari and his family are reported to be closely affiliated with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which has carried out attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians in Israel and its settlements in the West Bank in the past. Jabari's brother was one of the people who had been exchanged for Israeli abductee Gilad Shalit during a 2011 prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas. According to The Jerusalem Post , Jabari was "terminally ill" with cancer at the time of the attack.[ citation needed ]

Aftermath

Far-right Minister of Knesset Itamar Ben-Gvir claimed that his home had been fired at during the attack. IDF sources could not confirm his claim.[ citation needed ]

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid thanked the security forces for their work in stopping al-Jabari and said he was praying for the injured victims, vowing to crack down on terror with a "strong hand."[ citation needed ]

In February 2023, Israeli forces demolished Jabari's house in Hebron. [2]

Kiryat Arba or Qiryat Arba is an urban Israeli settlement on the outskirts of Hebron, in the southern West Bank. Founded in 1968, in 2022 it had a population of 7,490.

The ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Jewish Israeli settlers in the West Bank city of Hebron is part of the wider Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Hebron has a Palestinian majority, consisting of an estimated 208,750 citizens (2015) and a small Jewish minority, variously numbered between 500 and 800. The H1 sector of Hebron, home to around 170,000 Palestinians, is governed by the Palestinian Authority. H2, which was inhabited by around 30,000 Palestinians, is under Israeli military control with an entire brigade in place to protect some 800 Jewish residents living in the old Jewish quarter. As of 2015, Israel has declared that a number of special areas of Old City of Hebron constitute a closed military zone. Palestinians shops have been forced to close; despite protests Palestinian women are reportedly frisked by men, and residents, who are subjected every day to repeated body searches, must register to obtain special permits to navigate through the 18 military checkpoints Israel has set up in the city center.

The August 2010 West Bank shooting attack was an attack near the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, carried out by Hamas militants. Four Israeli settlers from the settlements of Beit Hagai and Efrat were killed after militants attacked their vehicle. It was the deadliest Palestinian attack on Israelis in over two years.

The 2002 Hebron ambush took place in the Wadi an-Nasara neighborhood in Hebron in the West Bank on 15 November 2002. Israeli forces were subjected to a double attack by fighters from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The battle was referred to in Israel as "The attack on the worshippers' route", Hebrew: הפיגוע בציר המתפללים. The place where the attack took place became known as the "Alley of Death" both in Hebrew and Arabic. The ambush was initially dubbed as the "Sabbath massacre" by official Israeli spokespersons.

The Murder of Yaron and Efrat Ungar was a shooting attack on June 9, 1996, during which two Palestinian gunmen killed Yaron and Efrat Ungar as they drove on a road between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Israel near Beit Shemesh. The Palestinian gunmen fired twenty bullets from their Mitsubishi van into the couple's car. Although the bullets missed the couple's one-year-old son, who was in a car seat in the back, both Yaron and Efrat were killed.

On 30 June 2016, a 17-year-old Palestinian male broke into a home in the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba and stabbed to death Hallel Yaffa Ariel a thirteen year old Israeli-American citizen in her bedroom. The attacker was then fatally shot by security guards. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed "incitement-driven terrorists" while the U.S. State Department condemned the "outrageous terrorist attack".
