On March 6, 2024, the Wickramasinghe family, Sri Lankan immigrants, were fatally stabbed inside of their house in Barrhaven, a suburb of Ottawa, Canada. Four children were killed, along with their mother, and a male family friend. Their father was injured. It was the worst mass killing in the city's recent history. [1]

Febrio De-Zoysa, 19, a Sri Lankan former Algonquin College student residing with the family, was arrested in connection with the incident, and was charged with six counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder. [2] [3]

Background

The seven victims were Sri Lankan immigrants who were "new to Canada." All except one were members of the same family; the remaining victim was a family acquaintance who was also living in the home. The surviving victim was the father of the family, while those killed included his wife and four children, aged 7, 4, 3 years, and the youngest 2 months. [4] The two oldest children were in Grade Two and junior kindergarten, respectively, at Monsignor Paul Baxter School. [5]

Incident

Emergency responders received calls to 911 shortly before 11 pm on March 6, 2024. Authorities responded within several minutes. [5]

Investigation

Police reported not having any previous interactions with the suspect or the victims. [5]

The student arrested in connection with the event appeared in court on the afternoon of March 7. [5]

Reactions

Mark Sutcliffe, the mayor of Ottawa, called the event "one of the most shocking incidents of violence in our city's history." [2] Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the event a "terrible violence". [4]

A memorial was set up in Palmadeo Park, close to the location of the event. [5]

Earlier that day, Poulin lured a 17-year-old Sri Lankan female neighbor named Kim Rabot to his family's home before raping her and stabbing her to death. That afternoon, he had traveled to the St. Pius X High School to embark upon his shooting spree.

Jennifer Teague was a teenager living in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada who was murdered during the early morning hours of September 8, 2005.

A series of uncoordinated mass stabbings, hammer attacks, and cleaver attacks in the People's Republic of China began in March 2010. The spate of attacks left at least 90 dead and some 473 injured. As most cases had no known motive, analysts have blamed mental health problems caused by rapid social change for the rise in these kinds of mass murder and murder-suicide incidents.

Cameron Blair was an Irish man who was fatally stabbed in the neck at a house party on the Bandon Road in Cork, Ireland on 16 January 2020. As the perpetrator was seventeen years old at the time of the killing, his name cannot be published under Irish law. The seventeen-year-old was reported to have gatecrashed the party alongside two other teenagers who were charged with less serious offences. Blair was transported to Cork University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The teenage killer is currently serving a life sentence in prison. On March 10, 2024, a familicide occurred in Manoa, Hawaii, when five members of a single family, including three children, were stabbed in an apparent murder-suicide. Police first received an anonymous call at 8:30 am regarding an argument from within the home, then returned at 9:15 am, where they then discovered the bodies. The deceased included the perpetrator, 46-year-old Paris Oda, his 48-year-old wife Naoka Oda, and their three children, Sakurako, Orion, and Nana aged 17, 12, and 10 respectively. Paris was under severe financial trouble in 2023, and in February of 2024, he revealed to his wife that he had not paid taxes in years, while telling relatives that he would rather die than go to prison for unpaid taxes. He also said that “he wanted to kill his family and burn the house down.” Paris unsuccessfully attempted to purchase a firearm in March. It is Hawaii's deadliest mass killing since the Xerox murders in 1999.
