Maidan is an originally Persian میدان word for a town square or public gathering place, adopted by various other languages: Urdu میدان (maidān); Arabic مَيْدَان (maydān); Turkish meydan; Bangla ময়দান, meaning field, and Crimean Tatar, from which Ukrainian also borrowed maidan.
