Assam Cricket Association (ACA) is the governing body of the Cricket activities in the Assam state of India. It is affiliated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The headquarters of ACA is at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium, Barsapara, Guwahati. [1] It administers Assam cricket team, Assam women's cricket team and its junior state teams.

History

Since Assam played its first home match in 1948, it has also played first-class home matches in chronological order Shillong, Jorhat, Nowgong, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Mangaldoi and Tinsukia. [2]

Until the 2002–03 season, when the zonal system was abandoned, Assam formed part of Eastern Zone. It has not seen much success in the Ranji Trophy circuit but won their plate group in 2006/07 before losing the semi-final to Orissa, despite having not won a first-class match in the previous two seasons.

In 2009–10 season Assam entered into elite group of the Ranji Trophy. In 2009-10 Ranji Trophy season Assam topped the plate group and subsequently progressed to the Super League. However, in the 2010–11 season, it ended at the bottom of its group in the Super League and face relegation to Plate League for the next season. In the 2012-13 edition of Vijay Hazare Trophy Assam played extremely well and finished runners up. [3] In 2014-15 Ranji season Assam again promoted to Group A level. [4]

The foundation stone of the Barsapara Cricket Stadium was laid by Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi in June 2004 and he again laid the foundation stone of the club house and stand of the stadium in July 2007 in the presence of then Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Niranjan Shah. It was inaugurated for international cricket in 2017.

Himanta Biswa Sarma became the president of the Assam Cricket Association in June 2016 when his party man Pradip Buragohain became the secretary. [5] [6] [7] [8] Dr Sarma was also longest serving vice president of the association serving from 2002 to 2016. Anjan Dutta was longest serving President of Assam Cricket Association. [9] [10] In January 2019, Ramen Dutta has been elected as the president and Ex-Ranji player Devajit Saikia was named as the secretary of Assam Cricket Association in the Annual General Meeting. [11]

Assam Cricket Association conducts various district, club and university level tournaments for juniors, seniors and women. Those are: Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy (Senior Inter-District tournament), Assam Premier Club Championship, Assam T20 Challengers Trophy, Nilay Dutta Inter-University Cricket Tournament, ACA Inter-Institution Cricket Tournament, JK Barooah U19 Inter-District Cricket Tournament, RG Baruah U16 Inter-District Cricket Tournament, Amarjit Sarma U15 Inter-District Boys Cricket Tournament, Pulin Das Trophy U14 Inter-District Boys Cricket Tournament, Umananda Bora U13 Inter-District Boys Cricket Tournament, Kanaklata Baruah Inter-Zonal State Women's Cricket Championship and Kanaklata Baruah Inter-District Women's Cricket Championship.

The Assam cricket team is a domestic cricket team represents the Indian state of Assam, run by the Assam Cricket Association. The team competes in the first-class Ranji Trophy tournament, limited-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament and the Twenty20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Nehru Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Guwahati, Assam, India. It was built in 1962 and holds the capacity of 15,000 spectators. Radha Govinda Baruah supervised, constructed and named it as Nehru Stadium. The stadium is operated by the Board of Sports of Assam, Government of Assam. It has been mainly used for football and cricket.

The Barak Valley is the southernmost region and administrative division of the Indian state of Assam. It is named after the Barak river. The Barak valley consists of three administrative districts of Assam namely - Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. The main and largest city is Silchar, which seats the headquarter of Cachar district and also serves as administrative divisional office of Barak valley division. The valley is bordered by Mizoram and Tripura to the south, Bangladesh and Meghalaya to the west and Manipur to the east respectively. Once North Cachar Hills was a part of Cachar district which became a subdivision in 1951 and eventually a separate district. Radha Govinda Baruah was the founder of The Assam Tribune, a group of news papers. Radha Govinda Baruah, an enterprising person in Dibrugarh, first conceived the idea of launching an English daily. With some help from his friends and well wishers, he brought out an English weekly newspaper instead of a daily on 4 August 1939 under the editorship of Lakshminath Phookan, former editorial staff of Hindustan Standard, a leading daily of Anand Bazar Group, Kolkata. He founded the Assam Tribune in 1939. He was a sports enthusiast, who was president of the Assam Cricket Association for over a decade. The iconic Nehru Stadium in Guwahati was built under his leadership in 1962. He is also noted for his contributions to the society and culture of Assam. He is called "the architect of modern Assam" for his being "instrumental in realising the educational needs" of the Assamese people. Radha Govinda Baruah College in Guwahati is named after him. He is also called the Sinhapurush for his immense bravery and enthusiasm.

The All Assam Chess Association is a registered chess association of the Assam state of India. It was formed in the late 1960s by Bodiyuz Zaman from Jorhat. The first president of the association was Kamakhya Prasad Tripathi. It is affiliated with the All India Chess Federation and officially accredited by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs, (FIDE).

Dainik Jugasankha, also transliterated Dainik Yugashankha, is a Bengali daily newspaper published simultaneously from Kolkata, Guwahati, Silchar, Siliguri and Durgapur. With a circulation of around 150,000 copies, it is one of the top ten newspapers in Assam.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Himanta Biswa Sarma</span> 15th and current Chief Minister Of Assam

Himanta Biswa Sarma is an Indian politician and lawyer serving as the 15th and current Chief Minister of Assam since 2021. A former member of the Indian National Congress, Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015 and soon was made convenor of NEDA. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having been elected since 2001.

The Assam Cricket Association Stadium, also known as ACA Stadium, Barsapara Cricket Stadium) and officially named Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium, is a cricket stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati, Assam, India. It is the home ground of the Assam cricket team and is owned and operated by the Assam Cricket Association. The stadium has a maximum capacity of 55,000 spectators.

Bhogeswar Baruah is an Indian former-athlete and coach. He was one of the first Assamese to win gold at an international event, winning a gold medal in an 800-metre running event at the 1966 Asian Games. He also won a silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay in the 1970 Asian games. He is a recipient of the Arjuna Award and is the first Assamese to obtain the Arjuna award.

Jorhat Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium located in Jorhat, Assam. This is the oldest stadium of Assam with the capacity of 12,000 spectators. It has earthen galleries which were designed by late Abani Mohan Choudhury. The stadium is venue for cricket and football tournaments. The first Ranji Trophy match in Assam was held at Jorhat Stadium in 1949/50. The stadium is owned and run by Jorhat District Sports Association.

Assam – 16th largest, 15th most populous and 26th most literate state of the 28 states of the democratic Republic of India. Assam is at 14th position in life expectancy and 8th in female-to-male sex ratio. Assam is the 21st most media exposed states in India. The Economy of Assam is largely agriculture based with 69% of the population engaged in it. Growth rate of Assam's income has not kept pace with that of India's during the Post-British Era; differences increased rapidly since the 1970s. While the Indian economy grew at 6 percent per annum over the period of 1981 to 2000, the same of Assam's grew only by 3.3 percent.

Ardhendu Kumar Dey was an Indian politician and Minister of Irrigation and Soil Conservation in the Government of Assam. He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Hojai constituency from 1991 till 2006 as a member of INC. He was re-elected as an MLA from Hojai from 2011 to 2016. In April 2021, he left the Indian National Congress.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bengali Hindus in Assam</span> Bengali Hindu community in Assam.

Bengali Hindus are the second-largest Hindu community just after Assamese Hindus in Assam. As per as estimation research, around 6–7.5 million Bengali Hindus live in Assam as of 2011, majority of whom live in Barak Valley and Brahmaputra Valley. Be it the Brahmaputra Valley or the Barak Valley, Bengali Hindus from both regions are the natives of Assam. Assam host the second-largest Bengali Hindu population in India after West Bengal.

The 2022 Silchar Floods were floods that occurred in the state of Assam, India beginning 19 June 2022 as a part of 2022 Assam–Bangladesh floods due to a breach of dyke of the Barak River at Bethkundi. The flooding affected 5.4 million people across 32 districts and caused the deaths of over 200 people across the affected districts. Silchar town, located just 1 km from the dyke was the worst affected, with 90 percent of the town underwater. While there are several reasons that caused the floods in the region to the extent that it did, there is a definite man-made aspect to the degree of damage that it caused. The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sharma also noted this in his address to the people.
