Austin Stacks is a hurling and Gaelic football club based in Tralee in County Kerry, Ireland. [1] Founded in 1917, the club has more All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals and GAA All-Stars than any other Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club in Ireland. [2]

History

Origins

Founded in 1917, [3] the club is named after Austin Stack, Irish revolutionary and captain of the All-Ireland winning Kerry Gaelic football team of 1904. They are the only club in Kerry to have won Senior County Championships in both hurling and football, including doubles in 1928 and 1931.

Gaelic football

The club won the 1976–77 All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. [4]

Notable players with the club have included Joe Barrett, Mikey Sheehy, Ger Power, John O'Keeffe, Cork's Dinny Long, William Kirby, Kieran Donaghy (who won player of the year after leading Kerry to success in 2006) and Daniel Bohane.[ citation needed ] The club has more All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals and GAA All-Stars than any other GAA club in Ireland. One year after winning the competition, following a 3-22 to 1-15 loss to Kenmare Shamrock during the 2022 Kerry Senior Football Championship, Austin Stacks were relegated from the Senior Championship for the first time in their history. They were subsequently relegated to division 2 of the county league following a devastating loss to local rivals Kerins O’Rahillys in 2023. [5]

Hurling

Austin Stacks have won the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship 4 times. They won the Kerry Junior Hurling Championship in 2012, 2015 and 2016. They now play in the Intermediate Championship. They also won Minor County Championships in 1955, 1967 and 1986.[ citation needed ]

Kieran Donaghy is an Irish Gaelic footballer and basketball player. He plays for Tralee club Austin Stacks and, formerly, at senior level for the Kerry county team. Donaghy won four All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals, eight Munster Championships and three National League titles with Kerry, and is the recipient of three All Stars Awards. He announced his retirement from inter-county football on 11 September 2018. Donaghy is also a long-time basketball player, currently playing for Tralee Warriors in the Irish Super League.

Ger Power is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for the Austin Stacks club and at senior level for the Kerry county team between 1973 and 1988. Power captained Kerry to the All-Ireland title in 1980.

John O'Keeffe is a former Irish Gaelic footballer who played for the Austin Stacks club and at senior level for the Kerry county team between 1969 and 1984. He was a highly talented midfielder, and one of the most stylish and accomplished full-backs in Gaelic football history. He later became the Irish international rules team manager.

Joe Barrett was an Irish sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club Austin Stack's and was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1923 until 1933. Barrett captained Kerry to the All-Ireland titles of 1929 and 1932.

John Mitchels GAA are a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. They are based in the Camp area just outside of Tralee.

Tracton GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the parish of Tracton in Cork, Republic of Ireland. The club is a member of the Carrigdhoun division of Cork GAA. The club fields teams in both Gaelic football and hurling, though it has won most success in hurling. The club's pitch is in the village of Minane Bridge.

Timothy Landers was an Irish Gaelic footballer. His league and championship career at senior level for the Kerry county team spanned sixteen seasons from 1930 to 1945.

The Kerry county football team represents Kerry in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Kerry GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Munster Senior Football Championship and the National Football League.

Cornelius Brosnan was an Irish Gaelic footballer, selector and trainer. At club level he played with Newtownsandes and at inter-county level with the Kerry senior football team. He usually lined out at midfield.
