The mascot for Bishop McGuinness is the Villain. The mascot comes from the school's predecessor, the Villa Marie Anna Academy. [3] They are members of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).
Basketball
The boys basketball team won two NCHSAA State Championships in 2009 and again in 2019. The 2009 team holds the school record for most wins in a season (31) and the best overall record (31–2). Boys Basketball has claimed 6 state championships: 1963, 1982, 1983, 1987, 2009, and 2019.
In 2014, the girls basketball team (the Lady Villains) won its ninth consecutive state championship, a NCHSAA Record, and tied for the 2nd longest consecutive state championship win streak nationally.
Cross-country
The Boys' Cross Country team has qualified for the NCHSAA 1A Regional and State meets seven consecutive times since 2005, finishing as low as eight, with their highest finish of third place in the 2011 NCHSAA 1A State Championship at Beeson Park. They have won the NCHSAA Northwest 1A Conference title in 2009 and 2011, as well as having won the NCHSAA 1A Midwest Regional Meet in both 2007 and 2011. They have won the state title twice, in 2012 and 2013.
The Girls' Cross Country team has an even more exceptional record. Although they have only appeared in the NCHSAA State Meet since 2006, they have been awarded runners-up three times. They have won the Midwest 1A Regional and Northwest 1A Conference meets five of the past six years, and holds the NCHSAA 1A State Title for 2008, 2012, and 2013. [4]
Boys' tennis
The Boys' Tennis team won the 2011 NCHSAA 1A State Championship defeating the North Carolina School of Math and Science in the final. In addition to the team championship, Senior Joseph Riazzi won the NCHSAA 1A individual doubles state championship.
Volleyball
The Girls' Volleyball team won NCHSAA Northwest 1A Conference title in the 2020 season with a 12-1 overall (8-1 conference) record, advancing to the Final Four of the 1A State Championship. In 2021 they repeated as conference champions with a 26-6-1 overall (12-0 conference) record, winning the conference tournament, and advancing to Elite Eight of the 1A State Championship.
Jesse O. Sanderson High School, more commonly called Sanderson High School (SHS), is a co-educational 9–12 public high school located in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States in the Wake County Public School System. The school was founded in 1968. It is named after a former superintendent of Raleigh public schools, Jesse O. Sanderson. Sanderson runs on a 2x4 block schedule; it was one of the first schools in the area to do so. It is known for its performing arts, athletic, and community outreach programs.
The Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum is a 14,407-seat multi-purpose arena, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Construction on the arena began on April 23, 1987, and it opened on August 28, 1989. It was named after Lawrence Joel, an Army medic from Winston-Salem who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1967 for action in Vietnam on November 8, 1965. The memorial was designed by James Ford in New York, and includes the poem "The Fallen" engraved on an interior wall. It is home to the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons men's basketball and women's basketball teams, and is adjacent to the Carolina Classic Fairgrounds. The arena replaced the old Winston-Salem Memorial Coliseum, which was torn down for the LJVM Coliseum's construction.
Grimsley Senior High School, also known as Grimsley High School or simply Grimsley, is a public high school in Greensboro, North Carolina. Formerly known as "Greensboro High School," "Greensboro Central High School," and then "Greensboro Senior High School," it is part of the Guilford County Schools system. The school has an enrollment of around 1,800 students in grades 9–12. Grimsley has a reputation for strong academics, having been ranked in the top 100 in the nation by Newsweek 4 out of the past 6 years.
Charlotte Catholic is a diocesan high school in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States founded in 1955. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte. Charlotte Catholic has a student to teacher ratio of 15:4.
Greensboro Day School is a private, non-sectarian school located in Greensboro, North Carolina. It enrolls students from age 2 through grade 12.
Bishop Lynch High School is a college preparatory school of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas founded by the Dominican Order in Dallas, Texas, United States. The school serves grades 9–12. It opened in 1963 with 365 students and now has over 1,000 students. In keeping with its Dominican tradition, the school mascot is a friar.
Wesleyan Christian Academy is a private Christian school located in High Point, North Carolina, across from the former Oak Hollow Mall complex. Wesleyan Christian Academy is accredited by AdvancED and the Association of Christian Schools International.
Parkland Magnet High School is a magnet school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina that offers an International Baccalaureate program and describes itself as a "Center for the Cultural Arts". Parkland was founded in 1965 as Parkland High School.
Athletes and sports teams from North Carolina compete across an array of professional and amateur levels of competition, along with athletes who compete at the World and Olympic levels in their respective sport. Major league professional teams based in North Carolina include teams that compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL), National Hockey League (NHL), Major League Soccer (MLS), and National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). The state is also home to NASCAR Cup Series races. At the collegiate and university level, there are several North Carolina schools in various conferences across an array of divisions. North Carolina also has many minor league baseball teams. There are also a number of indoor football, indoor soccer, minor league basketball, and minor league ice hockey teams based throughout the state.
Bishop Luers High School is a small Catholic high school located in the southside of Fort Wayne, Indiana, United States. Bishop Luers is owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. The school was founded in 1958 by the Franciscan Fathers of the Saint John the Baptist Province in Cincinnati, Ohio, along with the Sisters of Saint Francis Province in Mishawaka, Indiana. The first bishop of the diocese, John Henry Luers, is the namesake of the school.

Carver High School is a traditional public high school located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States. It serves students in grade levels 9–12 as part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools system. This historically black school was named for George Washington Carver. The school colors are blue and gold and the mascot is the yellow jacket.
Scott Douglas Cherry is an American college basketball coach and the former head men's basketball coach at High Point University. He replaced Bart Lundy in 2009. Cherry is a native of Ballston Spa, New York.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) is the governing organization of high school athletics in North Carolina, United States. The association maintains the official rule books and governs the officiating standards across the state.
Brian Robinson is a high school basketball coach for Bishop McGuinness High School in Kernersville, North Carolina. He led Bishop to 9 straight NCHSAA 1A state championships, which is a state record. The Villains won their 10th State Championship in 2022. He currently serves on the board to pick the North Carolina Gatorade Player-of-the-Year and is the WBCA Chair for the National High School All-American Team. Robinson is the author of three books, and has been a speaker at basketball clinics for the University of Florida, Georgia Tech, and Duke University. Was named one of the Top 100 High School Coaches in the 100-year history of the NCHSAA in 2013, known as a "Coach To Remember" in any sport, for either gender. Robinson was named a Living Legend in 2010 by The Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department.
The North Carolina A&T–Winston-Salem State rivalry was a series of athletic competitions between historic rivals North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Winston-Salem State University, both of which are located in the state of North Carolina. The intensity of the rivalry is driven by the proximity of the two schools, as both are only 30 miles apart via U.S. Interstate 40; the size of the two schools, as North Carolina A&T is the largest Historically Black College and University in the state and Winston-Salem State is the third largest; coaching personnel, and conference alignments, as both schools at one time were both members of either the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) or the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Although a less intense and bitter rivalry than that shared between North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central University, both A&T and WSSU fans placed great emphasis on this rivalry.
