Bruce Samazan (born 13 November 1970) is an Australian actor. He perhaps best known for being the only male actor to have played regular roles in Australia's "Big Three" soap operas of the 1990s: E Street , Neighbours , and Home and Away. [1] He won a Logie Award in 1992 and released a rap single in 1993. After he gave up acting in 2000, Samazan worked as a real estate agent.

Early and personal life

Samazan was born in Madagascar in 1970, but he and his parents moved to Australia in 1973 due to a coup in the country. [2] Samazan grew up in Wollongong and attended Bulli High School. [3] He holds duel French and Australian citizenship. [2]

In 1987, Samazan competed in the Wollongong Model of the Year contest, but came second to Ashley Paske, who went onto become an actor in Richmond Hill and Neighbours. [4] Samazan later became a brickie's labourer. [1] In 1990, just as Samazan's acting career was beginning, the French Government ordered him to go to France for compulsory military national service. However, Samazan was able to prove his Australian citizenship and stay in the country. [2]

Samazan lives in Noosa with his wife and two daughters. [5]

Career

In 1989, Samazan accompanied his girlfriend to an audition for a part in the Network Ten soap E Street . He was asked to try out too, but neither he or his girlfriend landed a role. [6] However, the casting director liked Samazan enough to invite him to attend a six-week acting course. Samazan auditioned again and was offered the role of new character Max Simmons, a new recruit at the community police station. [6] Introduced early in Season 2, his role was primarily comic relief, but with the addition of ruthless killer Sonny Bennett to proceedings, E Street's storylines grew darker and the character of Max became more central and balanced. In 1992, Samazan won the Logie Award for Most Popular Actor. [7]

By the beginning of 1993, E Street's popularity had dwindled and the producers became more and more desperate to lure viewers. This resulted in one of the soap's more outrageous plots which involved Samazan's character Max turning into a werewolf. Although this scene was part of a dream sequence, it was at this point that the tabloid media began to speculate that E Street had "jumped the shark", and the series was cancelled in May 1993. [8] Samazan stayed with the show until the final episode. His character fell in love with Bonnie Tate (Melissa Bell) who awoke from a coma just in time to see the final credits sequence. [9]

In mid-1993, Samazan released the rap music single "One of a Kind" under the pseudonym B-Man Samazan on the Westside Records label. [6] He filmed a music video for the song with Kellie Crawford from Teen Queens (and later of Hi-5 fame). [8] The song peaked at No. 80 on the ARIA Charts in June 1993. [10] Samazan's Neighbours co-star Scott Michaelson went on record during a 2003 court case saying Samazan had been lucky his song did not get too much airplay because it was "particularly bad". [11]

After the demise of E Street, Samazan was immediately cast in Network Ten's other major soap series, Neighbours . He played Mark Gottlieb, brother of established character Stephen Gottlieb (Lochie Daddo). [12]

From Neighbours, he went straight into the Seven Network's Home and Away for a six-month guest stint as the psychotic Brad Cooper who raped Chloe Richards (Kristy Wright). [13] He had previously guested on the serial as Mick in 1989 for four episodes.

Samazan appeared in guest roles in Big Sky and Head Start . He also appeared in the 1998 thriller film Game Room. [14] Samazan returned to Neighbours in 2020, reprising his role as Mark Gottlieb for the show's 35th anniversary. [5]

Post-acting career

After giving up acting in 2000, Samazan worked as a real estate agent in Wollongong and Helensburgh. [9] [15] He then spent 11 years working in digital marketing for Realestate.com.au, before moving on to work for downsizing.com, which focuses on retirement villages. [9]

Samazan Pty Ltd, a company registered in 1991 which was directed by Samazan, was deregistered in late 2008. [16]

Scott Robinson (<i>Neighbours</i>) Fictional character from the soap opera Neighbours

Scott Robinson is a fictional character from the Australian television soap opera Neighbours. He was created by Reg Watson as one of the serial's twelve original characters. Originally played by Darius Perkins, he made his debut during the first episode broadcast on 18 March 1985. Perkins was 20 years old when he received the role of teenager Scott. He felt some anxiety about his audition performance and did not think anything was going to come from it, until the production company contacted him a month later to sign on as Scott. When production moved to Network Ten in 1986, producers wanted "a more upfront" Scott and the role was recast to Jason Donovan, who joined the cast following his graduation from school. He made his debut on 12 February 1986, and producers hoped Donovan's blond hair and blue eyes would increase the character's appeal. Perkins later said that he had been physically and mentally exhausted after filming for nine months, and felt unable to continue in the role of Scott.

Charlene Robinson is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours played by Kylie Minogue. Charlene was introduced to the show along with several new characters, as part of a revamp by Network Ten to increase ratings. Minogue auditioned for the role in 1985, shortly after finishing her high school exams. She attended the audition dressed as the character and casting director Jan Russ cast her in the role. Minogue was initially contracted for a week, but this was later extended through to mid-1988. She made her first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 17 April 1986.

Darius Anton Perkins was an Australian actor. He was the original actor in the role of teenager Scott Robinson in the soap opera Neighbours in 1985 before the role was taken over by Jason Donovan the following year. Perkins also played Charlie in All the Green Year, Gary Samuels in Home and Away, and Ben in All the Rivers Run for which he won a Logie Award. After a lengthy time away from the screen, in 2013 Perkins returned to Neighbours as guest character Marty Kranic. Perkins also worked in the art department for two Bollywood films made in Australia.

Scott Ian Major is an Australian actor and TV and film director, known for his roles as Peter Rivers in the 1994 television teen drama series Heartbreak High and Lucas Fitzgerald in soap opera Neighbours. After leaving Neighbours in 2013, Major returned to direct over 200 episodes of the serial. He has since gone on to direct episodes of Playing for Keeps, and two miniseries Lie With Me and Riptide. Major reprised his role as Rivers in the 2022 reboot of Heartbreak High.

Mark Gottlieb (<i>Neighbours</i>) Soap opera character

Mark Gottlieb is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, acted by Bruce Samazan. Samazan hoped the role would help him further his aspirations to become a popular Australian actor. He relocated from Sydney to Melbourne for filming and signed a six-month contract, which he then required to extend. He made his first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 13 August 1993. Mark was introduced as the brother of established regular Stephen Gottlieb. The role initially required Samazan to put on a French accent, which he based on his own father's. In order to distinguish Mark from his E Street character Max Simmons, Samazan got a Caesar cut and Mark had a trendy European wardrobe.

Serendipity "Ren" Gottlieb is a fictional character from the Australian television soap opera Neighbours, played by Raelee Hill. Hill was spotted by the serial's casting director in a café, while she was on a break from filming another show. She was told to audition for the role, as she looked exactly how the producers had imagined Serendipity to look. She made her first appearance during the episode broadcast on 25 August 1994. Serendipity was introduced as the sister of Mark Gottlieb. Having been raised in a hippy commune, Serendipity retains her beliefs and is a "real bohemian". She moves in with Mark after returning to Australia from Amsterdam, where she worked as a nanny. During her time in the show she becomes good friends with Sam Kratz and Annalise Hartman, is almost beaten up by her boyfriend, becomes a designer and gets engaged to Luke Handley. Hill left the show after her contract was not renewed and her final scenes aired on 7 September 1995.

Scott Michaelson is an Australian retired actor and talent manager who is most famous for playing Brad Willis in Neighbours. He took over the role from Benjamin Grant Mitchell, who had been a guest character and later played Brad's cousin Cameron Hudson for over a year.

Joanna Evans is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Emma Harrison. Joanna was introduced as the younger half-sister of established character, Annalise Hartman. She made her first on screen appearance on 26 May 1995. Following Davies' departure from Neighbours in 1996, rumours began that Harrison's character would be written out of the show. However, the actress signed a new long-term contract with Neighbours a few months later. In February 1997, producers decided to write Joanna out of the show. A reporter for the Daily Mirror said Harrison was written out due to rows with the producers over her poor acting. Joanna departed on screen on 15 April 1997. In 2005, Harrison was invited to return to Neighbours for the 20th anniversary episode, but she did not appear.

Richard Huggett is an Australian film, television and theatre actor. After graduating from NIDA in 1988, Huggett guested in an episode of Home and Away, before he was cast as villain Sonny Bennett in E Street. Huggett's character killed four of the show's regulars, before taking his own life, bringing in strong ratings for the soap. Huggett went on to win the Logie Award for Most Popular New Talent in 1991 for his portrayal of Sonny. Huggett next played Glen Donnelly in another soap Neighbours from 1990 until 1992. He only stayed for a year, as he wanted more to pursue more demanding roles. In 1994, Huggett joined short-lived soap Paradise Beach as Sam Dexter and police drama Blue Heelers as supporting character Sean Neale. He has also made guest appearances in various television shows, including Col'n Carpenter, All Saints and Out of the Blue. He appeared in the Australian film Aiyai: Wrathful Soul in 2020 and re-joined the cast of Neighbours as Glen in 2021. In addition to his television and film work, Huggett has also appeared in a number of theatre productions.

Nicholas Bufalo is an Australian actor and director, perhaps best known for his role as Dr. Ben Green in A Country Practice and for directing a number of episodes for the soap opera Neighbours. He starred in the short-lived sitcom Bingles and the 1993 feature film Gino. He is also a founding member of The D-Generation. His directing work includes episodes of Home and Away, City Homicide, and Packed to the Rafters. In 2008, Bufalo received an Australian Directors' Guild Award nomination.
