The Columbus Monument is one of three monuments to Christopher Columbus in Baltimore, Maryland. Erected in 1892 in Druid Hill Park, the sculpture is known to be the second oldest monument in Baltimore towards the Italian explorer, the first being the Columbus Obelisk in northeast Baltimore. [1]

History

The Columbus Monument is dedicated towards the Italians of Baltimore as indicated on its inscription. [2]

In June 2020, the group known as the Baltimore BLOC threatened to destroy the monument by offering Mayor Young a dilemma of either removing all Columbus memorials or face vandalism as a consequence. [3] The statue of Christopher Columbus in Little Italy was destroyed by protesters on July 4, 2020, prompting questions surrounding the future of the historic monument.

A statue of Christopher Columbus stood in Camden, New Jersey, United States. The memorial was removed in June 2020. Levi Coombs III, pastor of the nearby First Refuge Progressive Baptist Church, stated that residents had called for the removal of the statue for 40 years but been ignored until the aftermath of the George Floyd protests. Camden Mayor Frank Moran stated, "There were a lot of atrocities toward the human beings that were on the island of Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands by this individual, and I believe [the statue] is and was offensive to all people of color, whether black or brown."

The New London, Connecticut statue of Christopher Columbus was a marble statue installed in the city from 1928 to 2020. In June, 2020 the New London City council voted to remove the statue from public land.

The Middletown, Connecticut Christopher Columbus statue was a memorial to Columbus that was installed in the city's Harbor Park. The sculpture was donated to the city in 1996 by the Italian American Civic Order, the Italian Society of Middletown and local Italian-American families.
