Crustacean Records is an independent record label in Wisconsin that was founded in 1994.
The label was founded by Chris Langkamp. Chris Langkamp is majority owner and Rory Nienajadlo is co-owner. The debut release was Fetus by Crab Shack, the band Chris Langkamp played bass with, and was cassette only. The second release, issued on compact disc, was the first Crustacean Records compilation featuring Helena Handbasket, Gethsemane, Crab Shack, Front of Trucker, Mas Optica, and Wet Dog. The label grew in the mid and late 1990s with notable mainstays of the label being Mad Trucker Gone Mad, Big Big Furnace, Brainerd, and System & Station.[ citation needed ]
The roster includes The Awesome Snakes, Birthday Suits, Bloodcow, Droids Attack, Drunk Drivers, Fuck Knights, The Giraffes, The Gusto, The Pimps, Imperial Battlesnake, Killdozer, Ouija Radio, Screamin' Cyn Cyn & The Pons, The Skintones, The Skullcranes, 20 Dollar Love, Things Fall Apart, and The Von Ehrics. Past notable artists include Carl, You Know Peggy, The Soviettes, 26 (Doc Corbin Dart), Mucky Pup, John Kruth, Hazard County Girls, Modern Machines, Peelander-Z, and Rocket Fuel Is the Key.
In a review of the label's Crust-o-Matic label compilation, In Music We Trust's Jeb Branin wrote "Crustacean has a knack for signing bands that rock the universe but are in no way cliché or mundane. Anything and everything they touch is unique and noteworthy". [1] In a 2008 cover story by Madison free alternative weekly paper The Isthmus, Rich Albertoni summed up Crustacean's effect on the Wisconsin rock scene by saying, "It's history because Crustacean has gone on to assemble one of the richest archives of Wisconsin rock over the past 10 years. The label's catalogue now includes more than 70 releases, mostly from bands originating in Madison, Milwaukee and the Fox River Valley." [2]
In Music We Trust is a music webzine, publicity company, and record label based in Portland, Oregon. It was established as a webzine in July 1997 by Alex Steininger and his friend Ryan O'Neill. Its original goal was to help promote work by new artists. Steininger founded the website after losing his job at another online magazine, when he contacted O'Neill for his web design expertise and asked him for help. The website was named a "cool site" by the Open Directory Project.
In August and December 2007, the label filmed ten of their acts performing at the High Noon Saloon, to be released on DVD in July 2008. [3] On March 13, 2008 Crustacean Record had its inaugural South by Southwest showcase in Austin, Texas at the Molotov Lounge as well as participating in the 2008 Indie Village [4] as part of the trade show in the Austin convention center. Crust was a musical group from Austin, Texas that was active during the late-1980s and 1990s and was featured on Trance Syndicate Records, a record label run by King Coffey from the Butthole Surfers. The group's members were John Hawkins, Jerry Page, and Richard Smith.
Red Red Meat was a 1990s Chicago-area blues-influenced alternative rock band. After their break-up, frontman Tim Rutili went on to form Califone, for which many of Red Red Meat's former members, including producer Brian Deck, often record and perform. Tim Hurley went on to form Sin Ropas.

Pain Teens was an experimental noise rock band formed in Houston, Texas in 1985 by Scott Ayers and Bliss Blood. The band used tape manipulation, digital delays, sampling, tape cut-ups and other effects in their music. They also included guitar, violin, marimba, saxophone, percussion, and many other musical instruments.
Moshi Moshi Records is a small London-based record label founded in 1998 by Adrian Pike, Michael McClatchey and Stephen Bass. The label has released music by bands including Lykke Li, Fimber Bravo, Bloc Party, Hot Chip, Late of the Pier, Hot Club De Paris, Kate Nash, Florence and the Machine, Architecture in Helsinki, the Wave Pictures, Disclosure, Sweet Baboo, Tilly and the Wall, Blue Foundation, Slow Club, Happyness, and Au Revoir Simone. Mates Of State's 2008 record Re-Arrange Us was Moshi Moshi's 50th release. Adrian Pike left the set up within a couple of years leaving McClatchey and Bass to carry on the business. These days it also includes a Management Company who manage Metronomy, Teleman, Slow Club and Sweet Baboo among others and has publishing interests in conjunction with Tummy Touch Music, Eagle-I Music and Blue Mountain Music.
Fowl Records was co-founded in 1994 by Jimi Haha from Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Richard James Burgess, the band's manager and Chris Keith, the band's agent as a means to release Jimmie's Chicken Shack's first two independent CDs. Almost immediately it became the top indie label in the Mid-Atlantic region specializing in alternative rock, punk, and jam bands. From 1998 to the closure of the label in 2002 Chris Smoker was the label manager.
Patrick Lee "Pat" MacDonald is an American musician and songwriter. He is the singer, guitarist, and main songwriter for Timbuk3, nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1987. He formed the duo with his wife, Barbara K. MacDonald, in Madison, Wisconsin in 1984 before moving to Austin, Texas, that same year. Their breakup in 1995 spurred a solo career that has steadily produced releases in both Europe and the US. "MacDonald is long known for his playful, edgy songs," says Guitar Player Magazine.

Will Johnson is an American musician, singer-songwriter and painter who is the lead singer of the bands Centro-matic and South San Gabriel. Called "one of the most prolific artists in American indie rock", Johnson has also released solo records, and is a member of the bands Monsters of Folk, New Multitudes and Overseas, and has also performed as part of the Undertow Orchestra.
American Laundromat Records is an independent record label founded in 2004 by Joe Spadaro. The label also manages the Caulfield Sisters and Tele Novella.
Droids Attack is a Madison-based stoner rock band. Much of the band's sound combines the heavy riffs of stoner metal with the speed and ferocity of punk. The band releases material on Madison's Crustacean Records and Minneapolis-based Round 13 Records co-op label. "Droids Attack’ premier album, “All Your Chicks Are Belong To Us” garnered much deserved recognition in the punk-metal realm of the Midwest. In 2004, the album won a MAMA for Best Punk Album." Their second full-length album, Fatal/Error has garnered positive reviews from stoner rock internet hub, stonerrock.com. The band usually plays in the Midwest area, but in 2008 played the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. They are infamous for their metallic robot mascot, Robo, who occasionally terrorizes audiences at shows.
The Lovely Sparrows is an Austin, Texas based indie rock band currently on Abandoned Love Records and founded by Shawn Jones. Their sound is categorized as indie rock, folk rock, experimental rock, alternative rock, or just rock, blending lush, complex arrangements with sing-along choruses that bring to mind folk-inflected pop and well-written novellas. Pulling Up Floors, Pouring on (New) Paint, released in 2006, captures the gorgeous melodies and warm, organic maladies of front man Shawn Jones. The September 2008 release saw the band embark on its most extensive touring to date, which included CMJ Music Marathon, Pop Montreal and South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. The Lovely Sparrows premiered the music video directed and animated by Eric Power of Clear Productions for "Year of the Dog" off Bury the Cynic during the 2009 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The video was honored as one of the 25 best music videos of the year 2008 by MusicForants.com. Bury the Cynics was on the best of list by Fensepost, The Bomb Shelter (#11), the Austinist (#5), Side One: Track One v1 (#7) and Side One: Track One v2 (#1).
Juniper Tar is an indie folk-rock band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, formed in 2005. The band originally started with Jason Mohr, Ryan Schleicher, Aaron Schleicher and Tuc Krueger. In 2008 Chris DeMay joined the group. Their style has been described as "rock and roll with a little roots sweetness."
Sixteen Deluxe is an alternative rock band from Austin, Texas. They were mainly active in the 1990s, recording initially for Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey's Trance Syndicate label. They issued one album on Warner Bros. Records and several others on indie labels. Sixteen Deluxe disbanded in 2000, and re-formed in 2010. In 2012, Sixteen Deluxe were inducted into the Austin Chronicle's Austin Music Hall of Fame.
Natty Nation is an American rock and reggae band from Madison, Wisconsin. Founded in 1995, as of April 20, 2017, the lineup included Demetrius "Jah Boogie" Wainwright, Aaron Konkol, Nick Czarnecki (guitar), Chris Di Bernardo (drums), & Dave "Captain Smooth" Randall. The group has released several studio albums since their 1996 debut The Journey Has Just Begun..., in 2010 Isthmus Magazine named their 1998 release Earth Citizen one of the "top 25 Madison pop albums of all time," writing that "Natty Nation's mix of roots reggae and hard rock proved unique and gained a following that remains today," and their 2016 release, Divine Spark debuted at #3 on the Billboard (magazine) Reggae Chart.

The five piece band is known for its mixture of classic and modern progressive metal combining strong vocals, complex instrumentation, and an expansive fantasy backstory to create energetic live shows. The band appears on-stage in armor and costumes.
The Smart Studios Story is a 2016 documentary film written, directed and co-produced by Wendy Schneider. The film chronicles the history and impact of Madison, Wisconsin-based recording studio Smart Studios, founded by Butch Vig and Steve Marker in 1983. The film premiered on March 16, 2016, at the SXSW Film Festival and was released on iTunes March 7, 2017.
Driftless Pony Club is a Chicago, Illinois-based indie rock band. Its lead singer and guitarist is Craig Benzine, who also produces YouTube videos under the alias "WheezyWaiter". After releasing two albums on the Madison, Wisconsin-based Sector Five Records, the band signed with DFTBA Records, on which they released their first profitable release, the EP Expert, in August 2009. Driftless Pony Club has toured across the United States multiple times, and has performed in lineups with other bands affiliated with DFTBA Records including Hank Green and the Perfect Strangers, Andrew Huang, Rob Scallon, and Harry and the Potters.
