BioMed Central describes itself as the first and largest open access science publisher. It was founded in 2000 and has been owned by Springer, now Springer Nature, since 2008.

Mechanisms of Development is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering all aspects of developmental biology. It is the official journal of the International Society of Developmental Biologists and is published by Elsevier. The journal was established in 1972 as Cell Differentiation and was renamed Cell Differentiation and Development in 1988. It acquired its current name in December 1990. The editor-in-chief is D. Wilkinson. A separate section of the journal, Gene Expression Patterns, covers research on cloning and gene expression. The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) intends to halt the practice of correlating the journal impact factor to the merits of a specific scientist's contributions. Also according to this statement, this practice creates biases and inaccuracies when appraising scientific research. It also states that the impact factor is not to be used as a substitute "measure of the quality of individual research articles, or in hiring, promotion, or funding decisions".
