Diana Riba i Giner (born 21 February 1975) is a Catalan politician from Spain and a member of the European Parliament.

Early life

Riba was born on 21 February 1975 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. [1] [2] She has a degree in pedagogy from the University of Barcelona. [1] [2]

Career

Riba started her career at the Center for Initiatives and Research Centers in the Mediterranean Foundation (CIREM). [1] Later she worked for La Caixa Foundation co-ordinating and managing conferences on cinema and literature at the CaixaForum. [1] [2] She was a cultural programmer for the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures held in Barcelona. [1] [2] She ran the Pati dels Llibres book shop in Sant Cugat del Vallès between 2008 and 2019. [1] [2] She was treasurer of the Catalan Council of the Children's and Youth Books (Consell Català del Llibre Infantil i Juvenil). [2] [3]

Riba is a member of the Castellers in Sant Cugat and the Catalan Association for Civil Rights (Associació Catalana pels Drets Civils). [1] [2] In December 2018 she was chosen by the Republican Left of Catalonia to be its number two candidate at the 2019 European Parliament election in Spain. [4] [5] [6] She contested the election as an Republics Now electoral alliance candidate in Spain and was elected to the European Parliament. [7] [8]

Personal life

Riba is the partner of jailed Catalan minister Raül Romeva. [9] [10] They have two children – Elda and Noah. [1] [2]

Raül Romeva i Rueda is a politician from Spain and a former Member of the European Parliament with the Iniciativa per Catalunya Verds, part of the European Greens. He sat on the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs and its Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. In the Catalan parliamentary election of 2015 he led the pro-independence electoral list, Junts pel Sí. He was named Minister for External and Institutional Relations, and Transparency in the Catalan Regional Government under President Carles Puigdemont on January 14, 2016 before his role was revoked by the Spanish Government on the 27th of October 2017, as part of the application of the constitution's article 155 during the Catalan crisis. Romeva spent almost 4 years in prison from 2017 to 2021, and in 2019 was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for sedition along with other members of the Puigdemont government. He was pardoned in 2021 and freed from prison.

Oriol Junqueras i Vies is a Catalan politician and historian. A former mayor of the municipality of Sant Vicenç dels Horts in Catalonia, Junqueras served as Vice President of Catalonia from January 2016 to October 2017, when he was removed from office following the Catalan declaration of independence and entered prison until June 2021 for his role in organizing the 2017 Catalan independence referendum. He is president of the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC). Born in 1969 in Barcelona, Junqueras grew up in the municipality of Sant Vicenç dels Horts. After graduating from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he taught history at the university.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Catalan Way</span> 2013 political demonstration in Catalonia

The Catalan Way, also known as the Catalan Way towards Independence, was a 400-kilometre (250 mi) human chain in support of Catalan independence from Spain. It was organized by the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) and supported by 14 nongovernmental groups. It took place in Catalonia on 11 September 2013, which is the National Day of Catalonia, known as Diada. Catalonia's Department of the Interior estimated the number of participants at about 1.6 million. The human chain followed the ancient Via Augusta, from Le Perthus up to Alcanar. According to Carme Forcadell, president of the ANC at that time, it was "a symbol of the unity of Catalan people to achieve national sovereignty".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Junts pel Sí</span> Political party in Spain

Junts pel Sí was a Catalan electoral, political and parliamentary alliance focused on achieving the independence of Catalonia from Spain. Established ahead of the 2015 Catalan regional election, it was formed by Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC), Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), Democrats of Catalonia (DC), Left Movement (MES) and Independence Rally (RI.cat), as well as a number of independent personalities from pro-independence sectors of civil society, including the pro-independence organizations Catalan National Assembly, Òmnium and the Association of Municipalities for Independence. The Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) had been invited to participate in the alliance, but refused to do so and ran on its own instead, citing its disagreement with the presence of politicians in the list.

An independence referendum was held on 1 October 2017 in the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia, passed by the Parliament of Catalonia as the Law on the Referendum on Self-determination of Catalonia and called by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The referendum, known in the Spanish media by the numeronym 1-O, was declared unconstitutional on 7 September 2017 and suspended by the Constitutional Court of Spain after a request from the Spanish government, who declared it a breach of the Spanish Constitution. Additionally, in early September the High Court of Justice of Catalonia had issued orders to the police to try to prevent the illegal referendum, including the detention of various persons responsible for its preparation. Due to alleged irregularities during the voting process, as well as the use of force by the National Police Corps and Civil Guard, international observers invited by the Generalitat declared that the referendum failed to meet the minimum international standards for elections.

Dolors Bassa i Coll is an educator, psychopedagogist and Spanish politician from Catalonia who held the position of Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Families in the Generalitat de Catalunya until Spain dismissed the Catalan government on 27 October 2017. She is known for her syndicalist career in the major Spanish trade union, Unión General de Trabajadores. Since March 2018 she was remanded in custody, without bail, by order of the Supreme Court of Spain, accused of sedition and rebellion. She was sentenced on October 14, 2019, to 12 years in prison for sedition, as being responsible for devoting several thousand public schools as polling stations in the 1 October 2017 referendum. She was freed in June 2021 following a government pardon.

Republics Now is an electoral alliance formed for the 2019 European Parliament election in Spain by Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), Basque Country Gather and Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) and with Oriol Junqueras as its leading candidate. The second list candidate was Diana Riba. The following candidates on the list were shared between EH Bildu, BNG and ERC. Moreover, Andecha Astur, Puyalón de Cuchas, Canarian Nationalist Alternative, National Congress of the Canaries and Unity of the People also participated in the candidature. It is a successor to The Left for the Right to Decide and The Peoples Decide coalitions in the 2014 election. ERC said that the alliance is open to other "Souverainist, republican and progressive forces".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Trial of Catalonia independence leaders</span> Ongoing trials of supporters of Catalan independence from Spain

The trial of Catalonia independence leaders, legally named Causa Especial 20907/2017 and popularly known as the Causa del procés, was an oral trial that began on 12 February 2019 in the Supreme Court of Spain. The case was tried by seven judges and was chaired by judge Manuel Marchena. Judge Pablo Llarena had previously coordinated an instruction between October 2017 and July 2018, as a result of which 12 people were tried, including the previous vice president Oriol Junqueras of the regional government and most of the cabinet as well as political activists Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart and the former Speaker of the Parliament of Catalonia Carme Forcadell. Some defendants remained in pre-trial detention without bail from the beginning of the instruction process and have thus already served part of their sentence.
