Digital Theatre is a company that provides digital platforms for the arts. Founded by Robert Delamere and Tom Shaw and launched in London in 2009, the company produces and licenses high-definition films of stage productions that can be streamed on demand for both consumer and educational purposes.

Contents

In 2011, Digital Theatre's flagship digital educational platform Digital Theatre+ was launched, providing institutions around the world with access to productions and educational resources to support the teaching of English and Drama.

Digital Theatre was acquired by ScaleUp Capital (formerly Root Capital LLP) in 2015. [1] In 2019, former head of BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds Neelay Patel was appointed CEO. [2]

Partners

Digital Theatre partners with a number of major theatre companies to produce and license productions for the platform. Partners include Sonia Friedman Productions, Almeida Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Royal Opera House, English Touring Theatre, Eclipse, Royal Shakespeare Company, The Old Vic and Frantic Assembly. [3]

Original productions

As well as licensing productions from partner companies, Digital Theatre also produces original live captures of stage productions in the UK.

The Really Useful Group Ltd. (RUG) is an international company set up in 1977 by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Kara Louise Tointon is an English actress, known for portraying the role of Dawn Swann in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. In 2010, she won the BBC competition series Strictly Come Dancing, and in 2015, she appeared as Maria in the ITV live production of The Sound of Music Live.

Julie White American actress

Julie K. White is an American actress of film, stage and television. She is a Tony Award winner for the play The Little Dog Laughed. She may be best known for her role as Nadine Swoboda in the television series Grace Under Fire and for her role as Judy Witwicky in the Transformers film series.

Tracie Bennett is an English stage and television actress. She trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in Clapham, London. She played the role of Sharon Gaskell in Coronation Street from 1982 to 1984, returning to the role in 1999 and again in 2021.

Marshall W. Mason

Marshall W. Mason is an American theater director, educator, and writer. Mason founded the Circle Repertory Company in New York City and was artistic director of the company for 18 years (1969–1987). He received an Obie Award for Sustained Achievement in 1983. In 2016, he received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater.

Peter Friedman is an American stage, film, and television actor.

Sonia Anne Primrose Friedman is a British West End and Broadway theatre producer. On 27 January 2017 Friedman was named Producer of the Year for the third year running at The Stage Awards, becoming the first person to win the award three times. In 2018, Friedman was featured in TIME100, Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2018 and was named Broadway Briefing's Show Person of the Year. In 2019, Sonia Friedman Productions ranked The Stage's most influential theatre producer in The Stage 100 2019.

Howard Panter British theatre producer

Sir Howard Hugh Panter is a British theatre impresario and theatre operator. He was founder, co-owner, joint chief executive and creative director of the Ambassador Theatre Group Ltd, the world's number one live-theatre company with almost 50 venues in Britain, the US and Europe. Panter and his wife/business partner, Dame Rosemary Squire, remain the second largest shareholder of ATG. In March 2020, Howard was appointed the new Chair of The Birmingham Rep Theatre.

<i>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory</i> (musical)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a stage musical based on the 1964 children's novel of the same name by Roald Dahl, with book by David Greig, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The Assembled Parties is a play written by Richard Greenberg. It relates the story of a Jewish family living on the Upper West Side of New York City over a twenty-year period, from 1980 to 2000. The play, which premiered on Broadway in 2013, received three Tony Award nominations, including for Best Play.

<i>Sunny Afternoon</i> (musical)

Sunny Afternoon is a jukebox musical with music and lyrics by Ray Davies and a book by Joe Penhall. Based on the formation and career of the English rock band The Kinks, the musical was commissioned and produced by Sonia Friedman and made its world premiere in 2014 at the Hampstead Theatre, London, before transferring to the West End's Harold Pinter Theatre. Featuring songs by The Kinks, Sunny Afternoon includes their hits such as "Lola", "Waterloo Sunset", "You Really Got Me" and the musical's title song, "Sunny Afternoon".

The Ferryman is a 2017 play by Jez Butterworth. Set during The Troubles, it tells the story of the family of a former IRA activist, living in their farmhouse in rural County Armagh, Northern Ireland in 1981.

The Stage Awards

The Stage Awards are theatre awards created by The Stage to recognise and celebrate theatrical achievements across the UK and internationally. Established in 2011, the awards recognise accomplishments by West End theatres, regional theatre, fringe theatres, producers, drama schools and more. The awards ceremony is held annually on the final Friday of January at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London. In 2020, the awards relocated to a new venue, the Royal Opera House.

The Inheritance is a play by Matthew Lopez that is inspired by the 1910 novel Howards End by E. M. Forster. The play premiered in London at the Young Vic in March 2018, before transferring to Broadway in November 2019.
