The Diocese of Makhachkala is a diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church on the territory of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya with its seat in the city of Makhachkala, the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. [1] The main temple is the Cathedral of the Assumption.
Historically, the territory of the diocese was part of the Diocese of Astrakhan . In 1842, after the formation of the Diocese of Stavropol , the territory of the current Makhachkala diocese became part of it.[ citation needed ]
On 28 December 1998, the territory of Dagestan became part of the Diocese of Baku.[ citation needed ] On 22 March 2011 Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya became part of the Diocese of Vladikavkaz .[ citation needed ]
On 26 December 2012, the Holy Synod formed the independent Makhachkala diocese, separated from the Vladikavkaz diocese, [2] with its seat in Makhachkala and with the inclusion of parishes and monasteries in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya. [3]
On 5 October 2015, Bishop Vaarlam of Makhachkala and Grozny led a religious procession in the city of Kizlyar, [4] which became the first in Dagestan in recent history. The procession, timed to coincide with the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the repose of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir and the 280th anniversary of the founding of the city, [4] brought together about 1,000 Orthodox believers who walked a total of about three kilometers. The Makhachkala deanery unites churches on the territory of Dagestan, [11] with the exception of the three northern regions. The borders of the deanery coincide with the borders of the Republic of Dagestan, except for the northern one, which runs along the Terek River.
Chechnya, officially the Chechen Republic, is a republic of Russia. It is situated in the North Caucasus of Eastern Europe, close to the Caspian Sea. The republic forms a part of the North Caucasian Federal District, and shares land borders with the country of Georgia to its south; with the Russian republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia, and North Ossetia-Alania to its east, north, and west; and with Stavropol Krai to its northwest.
The Second Chechen War took place in Chechnya and the border regions of the North Caucasus between the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, from August 1999 to April 2009. In August 1999, Islamist fighters from Chechnya infiltrated Russia's Dagestan region, declaring it an independent state and calling for holy war. During the initial campaign, Russian military and pro-Russian Chechen paramilitary forces faced Chechen separatists in open combat and seized the Chechen capital Grozny after a winter siege that lasted from December 1999 until February 2000. Russia established direct rule over Chechnya in May 2000 although Chechen militant resistance throughout the North Caucasus region continued to inflict heavy Russian casualties and challenge Russian political control over Chechnya for several years. Both sides carried out attacks against civilians. These attacks drew international condemnation.
Dagestan, officially the Republic of Dagestan, is a republic of Russia situated in the North Caucasus of Eastern Europe, along the Caspian Sea. It is located north of the Greater Caucasus, and is a part of the North Caucasian Federal District. As the southernmost tip of Russia, the republic shares land borders with the countries of Azerbaijan and Georgia to its south and southwest; and borders the Russian republics of Chechnya and Kalmykia to its west and north, while having a border with Stavropol Krai to its northwest. Makhachkala is the capital and largest city; other major cities are Derbent, Kizlyar, Izberbash, Kaspiysk and Buynaksk.
Ingushetia, officially the Republic of Ingushetia, is a republic of Russia located in the North Caucasus of Eastern Europe. The republic is part of the North Caucasian Federal District, and shares land borders with the country of Georgia to its south; and borders the Russian republics of North Ossetia–Alania and Chechnya to its east and west; while having a border with Stavropol Krai to its north.
Sheikh Mansur was a Chechen military commander and Islamic leader who fought for Chechnya and Circassia. He was influential in the resistance against Catherine the Great's imperialist expansion into the Caucasus during the late 18th century. Sheikh Mansur is considered the first leader of the resistance in North Caucasus against Russian imperialism. He remains a hero of the Chechen and North Caucasian peoples in general, and their struggle for independence.
The Terek Cossack Host was a Cossack host created in 1577 from free Cossacks who resettled from the Volga to the Terek River. The local aboriginal Terek Cossacks joined this Cossack host later. In 1792 it was included in the Caucasus Line Cossack Host and separated from it again in 1860, with the capital of Vladikavkaz. In 1916 the population of the Host was 255,000 within an area of 1.9 million desyatinas.
In June 2000, the North Caucasian Chechen separatist-led Chechen insurgents added suicide bombing to their tactics in their struggle against Russia. Since then, there have been dozens of suicide attacks within and outside the republic of Chechnya, resulting in thousands of casualties among Russian security personnel and civilians. The profiles of the suicide bombers have varied, as have the circumstances surrounding the bombings.
Grozny Oblast was an administrative entity of the Russian SFSR that was established as Grozny Okrug on 7 March 1944 and abolished on 9 January 1957.
The insurgency in the North Caucasus was a low-level armed conflict between Russia and militants associated with the Caucasus Emirate and, from June 2015, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) groups in the North Caucasus. It followed the official end of the decade-long Second Chechen War on 16 April 2009. It attracted people from the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and Central Asia, who then participated in the conflict, but volunteers from the North Caucasus were also fighting in Syria.
Archbishop Alexander was an Azerbaijani prelate, who served as the archbishop of Russian Orthodox diocese of Baku and Azerbaijan from 1999 until his death in 2021.
