Eduard "Edi" Irimia (born July 10, 1974) is a Romanian kickboxing promoter, television producer and businessman. He is the founder and CEO of Superkombat Fighting Championship (Superkombat) [5] [6] [7] and has promoted some of the most prominent names in kickboxing. [8]

Early life and education

Irimia was born in Ploiești, where his father was a boxing coach. Seeking to become a doctor, he attended medical school. [9]

Boxing promoter

After a trip to England in 1996 where he attended a Naseem Hamed fight, Irimia first has become a boxing promoter. He promoted the first professional boxing event in Romania and fighters like Tony Badea, being the leading promoter on Pro TV. [9]

On 23 March 2009 he was the cover subject of the first issue of Forbes Romania magazine. [10] [11]

Kickboxing promoter

Local Kombat (2003–2010)

In 2003, Irimia founded Local Kombat. The show proved a ratings success. Local Kombat was home for fighters such as Cătălin Zmărăndescu, Ciprian Sora, Ionuț Iftimoaie, Daniel Ghiță, Sebastian Ciobanu and Cătălin Moroșanu. WKN of Stéphane Cabrera was sanctioning the series of events. [12]

K-1 (2007–2010; 2012–2013)

In 2007, he co-promoted K-1 Fighting Network Romania 2007 with K-1. Between 2008 and 2010, Irimia promoted K-1's ColliZion and other events across Europe. On 21 May 2010, he promoted K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 in Bucharest (in association with K-1). He assisted the Japanese organisation in securing talent coming out of Europe. [13]

Between 2012 and 2013, together with the new board of K-1, Irimia promoted the K-1 World Grand Prix 2012 in Los Angeles and K-1 World Grand Prix 2012 in Tokyo final 16 events. [14] [15]

Superkombat Fighting Championship (2011–present)

In 2011, after the K-1 dissolution, fights promoted by Irimia started to air on Eurosport. After eight years of experience in Local Kombat, Irimia started to expand internationally launching the product under a new name, Superkombat World Grand Prix series (a knockout tournament featuring 16 kickboxers). [16] On December 14, 2016, the broadcast deal with CBS Sports was announced. [17] [18] [19]

Producer

Irimia expanded his fighting enterprise producing television content and films. In 2018, Irimia established "Superfilm," alongside Hollywood producers Moshe Diamant and Christopher Milburn. [20] [21]

Philanthropy

In December 2013, he donated all the incomes from the tickets sales for Superkombat World Grand Prix 2013 Final to flood victims of Galați. [22]

In 2015, he donated portion of ticket sales for an event at Institutul Clinic Fundeni supporting oncology patients (children with cancer). [23] [24]

Irimia once again donated half of ticket sales for Superkombat World Grand Prix 2015 Final to Colectiv nightclub fire victims. [25]

Personal life

He has been married to Oana Irimia since 2014, and they have one child together (Edward Andrei b. 2017). [28] Irimia also has a daughter (Michelle b. 2004) from a previous marriage. [29]

His brother, Emil Irimia, is a kickboxing and boxing supervisor and coordinator. [30] [31]

Cătălin Moroșan is a retired Romanian kickboxer, chanbara practitioner and professional rugby player. He is best known for his time in the Superkombat Fighting Championship (SUPERKOMBAT), where he competed in the heavyweight division. Moroșanu also competed for Local Kombat, K-1, Glory and Dynamite Fighting Show. He is currently a politician and kickboxing promoter, serving as president of the Dynamite Fighting Show.

Ionuţ Iftimoaie is a retired Romanian kickboxer. Besides the K-1, Iftimoaie has fought for a number of other promotions including the Local Kombat and SUPERKOMBAT. He defeated names such as Freddy Kemayo, Petar Majstorović, Sergei Gur or Jorge Loren.

Bogdan Cristian Stoica is a Romanian professional kickboxer and boxer, and former wushu practitioner. Stoica is also one-time SUPERKOMBAT Cruiserweight Champion, one-time Enfusion Light Heavyweight and two-time wushu national champion. He was also ranked as a top-10 middleweight in the world for several years by LiverKick.com, CombatPress.com and GloryKickboxing.com. He has competed for GLORY, ONE Championship, SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship, Enfusion, Wu Lin Feng and Glory of Heroes.

Andrei Cătălin Stoica is a Romanian kickboxer competing in the Light Heavyweight division. He was the first to hold the SUPERKOMBAT Super Cruiserweight Championship and held the SUPERKOMBAT record for most consecutive title defenses.

Frank Muñoz is a Spanish heavyweight kickboxer, who has competed in the SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship, where he is a former 2013 SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix Tournament Champion. He is also the former WAKO-Pro K-1 European champion.

Sergiano Herbert Cairo, better known as Redouan Cairo is a Surinamese-Dutch kickboxer fighting in the Superkombat Fighting Championship where he is the 2013 Superkombat World Grand Prix Tournament Runner-up. Also a Mixed martial artist, he is a former WAKO-Pro world cruiser heavyweight K-1 rules -94.1 kg champion.

Amansio Andrei Paraschiv is a Romanian professional kickboxer and boxer. He won back to back gold medals in the WAKO European Championships, and is the current SUPERKOMBAT Middleweight Champion. Paraschiv became champion on 12 November 2016 after defeating former It's Showtime 69MAX champion and reigning title holder Chris Ngimbi.

Ciprian Sora is a Romanian kickboxing trainer and founder of the Golden Glory Romania gym in Bucharest. As an athlete, he became the first ever Romanian to win a gold medal at the Muay Thai world championships in 1999 and still holds the record for that. Sora had an amateur record of 75–5, being undefeated in Romania throughout his career before turning professional. He signed with Local Kombat, the future SUPERKOMBAT, in 2004.

Florin Lambagiu is a Romanian professional kickboxer, former sambist and mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the super middleweight division of the Dynamite Fighting Show (DFS), where he is the current DFS Super Middleweight Champion and was named Fighter of the Year in 2019. Lambagiu also competed for Colosseum Tournament, where he is the former Colosseum Tournament World Light Welterweight Champion.

The 2020 season was the 18th season of competitive kickboxing in Romania. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania, the promotions went on hiatus. They resumed holding events after the middle of the year.

The 2018 season was the 16th season of competitive kickboxing in Romania.

Cristian Ristea is a Romanian professional kickboxer, currently competing in the heavyweight division of GLORY. He also competed for Dynamite Fighting Show (DFS), Golden Fighter Championship (GFC), Superkombat Fighting Championship, KO Masters and Enfusion. He is the current GFC Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion.

Ștefan Lătescu is a Romanian professional kickboxer and boxer, and former Muay Thai and kempo practitioner, currently signed to GLORY. A former amateur in two sports, Lătescu notched over 150 wins in amateur kickboxing, and is the youngest senior heavyweight champion in the amateur boxing history of Romania. He is still undefeated nationally in boxing.
