Competition format

The team show jumping event consisted of two rounds, held separately from the individual competition. The top 8 teams from the first round qualified for the second round. Each rider on the team rides the course the rider with the most faults, score is thrown out, the remaining score are added up to determine the total points. This was repeated in the second round, both rounds were then added together to determine placement, if tied a jump-off between all tied teams would determine the winners.

The individual jumping event, part of the equestrian program at the 2004 Summer Olympics, was held from 22 to 27 August 2004 in the Olympic Equestrian Centre on the outskirts of Markopoulo in the Attica region of Greece. Like all other equestrian events, the jumping competition was mixed gender, with both male and female athletes competing in the same division.

The equestrian events at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich included show jumping, dressage and eventing. All three disciplines had both individual and team competitions. The youngest participant was Kurt Maeder from Switzerland at 19 years old, while the oldest rider was Lorna Johnstone from Great Britain at 70 years old.

Venezuela competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia, and in the equestrian events held in Stockholm, Sweden. Twenty-two competitors, all men, were selected by the Venezuelan Olympic Committee to take part in 16 events across 5 sports. The delegation featured no female competitors, for the second time, and won no medals.
