FBUs Pokalturnering (unofficial English translation: FBU Cup or Funen Cup) was a Danish regional knockout association football competition contested annually from 1920 to 1953 by members of the regional football association Funen FA (FBU). Organised by and named after FBU, it was the third regional cup competition introduced on a national level, and the second in the province, after the KBUs Pokalturnering in 1910 and the LFBUs Pokalturnering in 1915. [1] [2] [3] The 1953 season of the cup tournament became the last edition due to the Danish FA's introduction of a new national-wide cup competition in 1954.

Contents

For the most part, the matches in the competition took place during the course of the fall season, beginning in the summer months with the first round, and culminating in a final match later in the same half season, but due to scheduling issues some finals and replay matches were not played until the following year. [4] Despite a modest start for the tournament, several cup matches evolved into major events, receiving much media coverage at both regional and national level, becoming topics of prolonged conversation in the local community and marking cities and villages for a few days. In the summer of 1920, the board of Funen FA formed a new cup tournament, named FBUs Pokalturnering, initially intended to be held during the months of August and September, hence taking place before the start of the regional association's own league tournaments. [9] The reasoning behind its establishment was to include an additional competitive tournament, that could function as training for players aiming towards being selected on the regional squad for the recently installed Sylow-Tournament, gather more interest from spectators and give the clubs an additional source of income. [9] The tournament was installed with rules applied for a knockout competition with the composition of the each match being determined by drawing lots. [9] In order to determine a match winner if a game was tied, an additional extra time (two periods of 15 minutes each) was to be played followed by 15 minutes with an early implementation of the golden goal format (g.e.t./g.g.) — the first team to score a goal would win the match giving a maximum of 135 minutes of total match play. [9] Between 1920 and 1928, the tournament rules stated that an additional extra time (two periods of 15 minutes each) should be played to determine cup finals, that were tied after full time (90 minutes). [2] In 1929, the rules were changed, so that a replay match was scheduled, if a semi-final or final match was tied. [2]

The rules has varied throughout the years, but the competition has always remained open to all Funen FA member clubs, both clubs playing in the association's city league tournaments (byklubber) and in village league tournaments (landklubber), basing participation on registration rather than qualification. [10] As a consequence the number of participants have varied greatly throughout the tournamenty's history starting with seven teams (B 1909, B 1913, Odense BK, Svendborg BK, Kerteminde FK, Assens G&IK and Hundslev BK) in the 1920 edition and steadily increasing the number to 66 teams in the 1944 edition. [10] [2] [6] [4] First introduced at the ninth cup edition, the tournament also began being open to reserve teams, who on several occasions were matched against the same club's first teams. [4] [2] B 1909's reserve team reached the semi-finals of the 1942 edition, where they were drawn against the club's first team, and losing the match 8–1. [11]

On 4 October 1919, the Danish government placed an amusement tax of 40% on certain sport events, which affected the conduct of and attendance figures at association football matches with admissions, causing either entrance fees to be abolished, making competitive and exhibition matches completely free or having clubs limit their games to active and passive members-only to avoid the taxation. [12] Hence, in order to attend the first cup final match on 29 August 1920 between Odense BK and reigning regional league champions B 1909, spectators had to already be (or become beforehand) a member of one of the regional football association's clubs. [13] [12] If a club decided to take admission to a cup match, the Funen FA had determined the entrance fee should be minimum DKK 1 (as per 1920) and half the price for children. [9]

Despite the Danish FA establishing the short-lived nation-wide cup tournament, Danmarkspokalturneringen in 1940, the regional Funen Cup tournament continued its existence. [7] At a meeting on 15 June 1945, the Funen FA cancelled the 1945 edition due to the difficult travel conditions in place at the end of Denmark's occupation in World War II, and instead focusing their efforts on rebooting the regional league tournaments. [14] [15] The Funen cup tournament was discontinued after the 1953 edition ahead of the introduction of the national-wide cup competition beginning in 1954, the DBUs Landspokalturnering, organised by the Danish FA (DBU).

The most successful club in the history of the tournament's 33 editions was B 1909, who won a total of fourteen cup titles and appeared as a losing finalist on nine occasions. [4] [3] Only seven clubs, and mostly clubs from the main city on the island of Funen, Odense (especially B 1909, B 1913 and Odense BK), appeared in the finals. A club had to win five cup championship finals, also known as lots, in order to keep the silver trophy permanently — the trophy was distributed as a perpetual prize kept by the winner until the next season. [10] The first trophy was financed by Fyns Boldspil-Union and was eventually won by B 1909 in 1930, the second trophy was won by B 1913 in 1939, while the third trophy, valued at DKK 600 (as per 1941), was won by B 1909 in 1944 after five consecutive cup titles and having the only club name on the trophy. [2] [6] [16] A fourth version of the trophy was installed by the Foreningen til Indkøb af Boldspilrekvisiter A/S (F.I.B.). [14]

As of the 2020–21 season, the club's senior men's team play in 1st Division, the second-tier of professional football in the country. The club consists of an amateur department and a professional section, that is wholly owned by Fremad Amager Elite ApS – a private limited company created on 2 December 2013, initially with 80/20% ownership split between the new investors and the remaining 20% by the members – and small portion by the club's amateur department. The club have primarily played their home games at Sundby Idrætspark since the stadium's inauguration in 1922. Fremad Amager's last spell in the highest football league in Denmark was in the autumn of 1994. Ever since the first participation in the first nationwide league tournament in 1927, and subsequent promotion in 1929, the club has spent the majority of its history – with the exception of two seasons – in the different divisional structures. The club reached the Danish Cup final in 1971–72 season while playing at the second highest league level, but lost against Vejle BK, who had also won the Danish championship in 1971. As a result, BK Fremad Amager participated in the 1972–73 European Cup Winners' Cup, but did not advance beyond the first round.

KBUs Pokalturnering was a Danish regional knockout association football competition contested annually from 1910 to 1953 by clubs that were members of the regional football association Copenhagen FA (KBU). Organised by and named after KBU, the competition rules has varied from being open to all Copenhagen clubs and being a closed tournament (1920–1946) reserved only for the highest ranking clubs, and as a consequence the number of participants have varied greatly throughout its history. For the first 10 seasons, between 7 and 13 teams participated until a fixed number of 8 teams was introduced from 1920 until 1946. When both the Sommerpokalturneringen and the KBUs B-Pokalturnering, both featuring the lower ranking KBU teams, were discontinued after their 1946 edition, the Copenhagen FA again allowed lower ranking clubs to participate in the association's primary cup competition, increasing the number of teams to 52. For the most part, the competition took place in the fall season and since the 1913 edition culminating in a final played at Københavns Idrætspark that saw large attendance figures and generated much media coverage.

The 1926–27 Landsfodboldturneringen was the 14th edition of the Danish national football championship play-offs, a Danish FA-organised club football tournament between the championship clubs from each of the six regional football associations. In advance of the tournament, a play-off structure had been agreed, which meant that the winners of KBUs Mesterskabsrække were directly qualified for the national championship final against the winner of the Provincial tournament. The semi-finals consisted of two matches; on one side the champions of JBUs Mesterskabsrække played against the champions of FBUs Mesterskabsrække and in the other match, the champions of the LFBUs Mesterskabsrække tournament played against the winners of a preliminary round between the champions of SBUs Mesterskabsrække and BBUs Mesterskabsrække.

The 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold was the 1st edition of the new year-long league structure for the Danish national football championship play-offs, a Danish FA-organised club football tournament between the highest ranking clubs from each of the six regional football associations. The national tournament at the top of the Danish football league system consisted of two stages, a preliminary round contested by 20 teams split into 5 groups determined by draw and distributed evenly among all regional associations, where the five winners of each group would qualify for the final championship round held at the end of the season. The clubs participating in the nationwide competition were also simultaneously contesting in their local regional league championships.

Funen Series

Funen Series for men, also known as Albani Series for men for sponsorship reasons, and often shortened to FS serien and FS Herre, is the highest division for men organised by the regional football association DBU Fyn (DBUF) and one of the fifth-highest divisions overall in the Danish football league system. The league, deciding the Funen Football Championship, was first introduced with the 1904–05 season and throughout the years the competition format have gone through several series of changes. At the time of the league's introduction, it was placed at the top of the Danish football league system featuring the best regional amateur teams of Funen, but has since been moved to its current status as the fifth best level in Danish football, after a short period as the sixth best level, now featuring lower ranking amateur teams including the reserve squads of clubs playing at the Danish third league tier or above.

The season was launched with one match on 22 August 1926 between the last season's runners-up in Copenhagen Football League B.93 and the newly promoted league club BK Fremad Amager. This season's installment was won by B.93 after defeating Kjøbenhavns BK 5–1 in the final played at Københavns Idrætspark on 7 November 1926, which was the club's fifth cup title after having contested in eight finals of the tournament. The 8 participants in the tournament included the six members of the 1925–26 KBUs Mesterskabsrække and the two highest placed teams from the 1925–26 KBUs A-række.

The launch of the season began on 26 September 1926 with three matches and the final round of regular league fixtures were played in April 1927 with the play-off matches being held on 1–8 May 1927. Svendborg BK were the defending league champions. The winner of the league would automatically qualify for the semifinals of the Provincial championship tournament that was held as part of the 1926–27 Landsfodboldturneringen that was played at the end of the regular season. The three highest ranking teams in the final standings participated in the inaugural season of the new Danish Championship play-off structure, the 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold. All eligible teams in the FBUs Mesterskabsrække including the best teams of the 1926–27 FBUs A-række would also participate in the next season of the Funen regional cup tournament, 1927 FBUs Pokalturnering.

The league ran simultaneously with the inaugural edition of the 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold, in which three the league's best placed teams from the previous season participated. The three highest ranking teams in the final standings would automatically qualify for the 1928–29 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold. All eligible teams in the FBUs Mesterskabsrække including the top placed teams of the 1927–28 FBUs A-række would also participate in the next season of the Funen regional cup tournament, 1928 FBUs Pokalturnering. Provinsmesterskabsturneringen

Provinsmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold was a knockout association football competition contested annually between 1913 and 1931, organised by the Danish FA (DBU), which determined the championship of the provinces. Throughout the competition's existence, the five regional football championship clubs from Bornholm FA (BBU), Funen FA (FBU), Jutland FA (JBU), Lolland-Falster FA (LFBU) and Zealand FA (SBU) participated after the end of normal league season, except for the years 1916–1920 and 1931. Until 1927, the cup tournament was part of the Danish Championship play-off, Landspokalturneringen, and was held prior to the Danish National Championship semifinal or final. Beginning from the 1928-season, the regional championship became a separate tournament held alongside the Danish Championship, but still organised by the Danish FA, now under the official name of Provinsmesterskabsturneringen. The 1915 edition was not played due to the limitations imposed as a consequence of World War I. The tournament was abolished after the 1931 edition, where the Jutland FA representative, Esbjerg fB, withdrew from the competition due to lack of time in its schedule.

1928 Provinsmesterskabsturneringen football tournament season

The 1928 Provinsmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold was the 15th edition of the Danish provincial championship play-off, Provinsmesterskabsturneringen, the second highest senior cup competition, crowning the best provincial championship club of the five regional football associations outside the dominating Copenhagen football clubs, organised and financially supported by the national football organization Danish FA (DBU). This was the first edition of the tournament under its new status as a separate championship cup tournament, no longer being an essential part of the road to winning the Danish Football Championship, which it had been under the previous structure of Landsfodboldturneringen. The new Danish Football Championship structure, had its debut this season, 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen. Following a recommendation by the five provincial football associations, the Danish FA finally decided to re-establish a provincial football tournament in late March 1928.

The 1927–28 SBUs Mesterskabsrække was the 32nd season of the Zealand Football Championship since its establishment in 1902 under the administration of Sjællands Boldspil-Union (SBU), and the 1st season since the league was renamed from SBUs A-Række to the SBUs Mesterskabsrække. The launch of the season began on 28 August 1927 and the final round of regular league fixtures were played in 20 May 1928 with the championship replays being held on 27 May and 3 June 1928 — including a 5 months long winter break between November and March. Skovshoved IF were the defending league champions from the 1926–27 season. The league ran simultaneously with the inaugural edition of the 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold, in which three the league's best placed teams from the previous season participated. The four highest ranking teams in the final standings would automatically qualify for the 1928–29 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold. After the end of the season, the league winner would take part in the 1928 Provinsmesterskabsturneringen.

The 1927–28 JBUs Mesterskabsrække was the 30th season of the Jutland Football Championship since its establishment in 1902. The season was launched in August 1927 and concluded in May 1928 with the final match of the regular league fixtures, while the championship play-offs and promotion/relegation play-off matches were held in May and June 1928. Aalborg BK won both final matches, securing their 4th Jutland league championship and qualifying for the 1928 Provinsmesterskabsturneringen, which they also won. Holstebro BK and BK Herning Fremad were relegated and replaced by Brønderslev IF and Haderslev FK from the 1927–28 JBUs A-række. In the 1927 JBUs Pokalturnering, Aalborg BK obtained their fourth consecutive cup championship, by winning the final against Esbjerg fB.

The 1926–27 JBUs Mesterskabsrække was the 29th season of the Jutland Football Championship since its establishment in 1902, and the 5th season since the regional top-flight league was rebranded and reorganised from JBUs A-Række to the JBUs Mesterskabsrække. The season was launched on 12 September 1926 and concluded on 8 May 1927 with the final match of the regular league fixtures, while the two-legged championship play-off and the promotion/relegation play-off matches were held between 15 May and 12 June 1927. Horsens FS secured their second consecutive Jutland league championship and qualified for both the provincial semi-finals of the 1926–27 Landsfodboldturneringen and the group stage of the 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen. Horsens FS' reserve team were relegated and replaced by Kolding BK of the 1926–27 JBUs A-række, who had won the regional second-tier league championship. In the 1926 JBUs Pokalturnering, Aalborg BK obtained their third consecutive cup championship, by winning the final against Esbjerg fB.

The 1963–64 Danish Cup was the 10th installment of the Danish Cup, the national association football cup competition in Denmark. This year's edition began with the regional qualifying rounds among the lower ranking members of the six regional governing bodies in early May 1963, and concluded with the grand cup final on 7 May 1964. A total of 707 clubs participated in the cup tournament – the highest number of teams since the cup's foundation. 671 teams were registered for the qualifying rounds, of which only 44 teams would quality for the proper rounds, under the auspices of the Danish FA's tournament committee, joined by 36 additional teams from the first, second and third divisions in the Danish football league system.

The 1964 Danish Cup Final was a men's association football match between Esbjerg fB and Odense KFUM played at Københavns Idrætspark on 7 May 1964. It was the final match to determine the winner of the 1963–64 Danish Cup, the 10th season of the Danish national-wide annual football knockout competition, the Danish Cup, open to all DBU member clubs. This was the first time that two sides had ever met in a domestic cup competition and only the third time in a competitive league game. For Odense KFUM, the match represented their first opportunity to win a title on a national level, having never reached the quarterfinals in previous seasons in the cup's current incarnation, while Esbjerg fB were participating in their third cup final, having lost on both previous occasions. This was the third consecutive year the tournament's final featured a team from Odense.

The 1926 FBUs Pokalturnering was the 7th edition of the regional tournament, FBUs Pokalturnering, the highest senior cup competition organised by the Funen FA (FBU). The tournament was held in the third quarter of 1926 with B 1913 as the defending cup champions. The season was launched on 8 August 1926 with the preliminary round involving two matches involving Ejby BK versus Dalum BK and Assens G&IK versus AIK Bogense, while Bogense G&IF and Arbejdernes I&BK (AIB) of Middelfart both received a bye to the next round. A total of eighteen teams from the 1925–26 FBUs A-række, the 1925–26 FBUs B-række and three new member clubs of the regional football association participated in the cup tournament, which embraced seventeen cup matches — the reigning Funen champions Svendborg BK from the top-flight league choose not to participate in this year's edition.

The 1926 JBUs Pokalturnering was the 3rd edition of the regional tournament, JBUs Pokalturnering, the highest senior cup competition organised by the Jutland FA (JBU). The tournament was held in the third and fourth quarter of 1926 with Aalborg BK as the defending cup champions. The season was launched on 22 August 1926 with the first round, embraced five cup rounds and concluded on 21 November 1926 with the cup final. A total of 29 clubs participated in the cup tournament, which was the same number of teams as the previous season.

The 1963–64 Danish Cup qualifying rounds inaugurated the 10th season for the Danish Cup. The qualifying rounds of the cup tournament were governed by the six regional football associations, the Bornholm FA, Copenhagen FA, Funen FA, Jutland FA, Lolland-Falster FA and Zealand FA. 671 teams were registered for the qualifying rounds, of which only 44 teams would quality for the proper rounds, under the auspices of the Danish FA's tournament committee, joined by 36 additional teams from the first, second and third divisions in the Danish football league system. The Danish FA dictated that the ticket prices to the qualifying matches should be at least DKK 2 for adults and DKK 1 for children.

Amager Boldspil-Union, shortened to ABU, was a subregional governing body for men's association football on the island of Amager, Denmark. The Amager Football Association governed the league and cup tournaments for the official championship of Amager, known as ABUs Amager-Turnering and ABUs Pokalturnering since its inception in March 1912. In 1916, the association's clubs formed the regional Københavns Forstadsklubbers Boldspil-Union (KFBU). Representative teams, either composed of individual clubs and a selection of players from several teams, referred to as Amager, competed in KFBU tournaments or in exhibition matches against other representative teams and clubs. The subregional football association published a member's magazine known as Unionsbladet, which evolved into the KFBU magazine known as Fodboldbladet.
