The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is an American college athletic conference whose member institutions are located primarily in the Southern part of the United States. Its fourteen members include the flagship public universities of eleven states, two additional public land grant universities, and one private research university. The conference is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. The SEC participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I in sports competitions; for football, it is part of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A.
Association football has been included in every Summer Olympic Games as a men's competition sport, except 1896 and 1932. Women's football was added to the official program in 1996.
The World Military Cup is a football competition for national military teams. It is organized by the International Military Sports Council (CISM). The tournament has been held since 1946 and was originally called the World Military Championship. The name changed for the 2001 edition. When the multi-sport Military World Games was set up in 1995, the football championship was incorporated into it, but it is still being held independently every two years.

The 2003 All-Africa Games football tournament was held in Abuja, Nigeria between 3–16 October 2003 as part of the 2003 All-Africa Games and featured both a men's and women's African Games football tournament. Both tournaments featured eight (8) teams. In Men's play, Cameroon became the first nation to win this tournament three times. The Women's tournament was the first-ever for the Games.

South Africa competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's eighteenth participation overall and sixth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics in the post-apartheid era. The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) sent a total of 125 athletes to the Games, 67 men and 58 women, to compete in 17 sports. Field hockey and women's football were the only team-based sports in which South Africa were representation at these Olympic games. There was only a single competitor in archery, BMX cycling, judo, shooting and weightlifting.

The Seychelles women's national football team is the national team of the Seychelles. It does not officially exist and has not played in a FIFA recognised match. The national team has played in two eighty-minute long games in 2005 in a tournament hosted by Mauritius, with the Seychelles losing both matches. An official under-17 national team exists and had regular training sessions in 2006. The sport faces several development problems inside the country including a lack of popularity for the sport, and few female players and teams. Women have gained football leadership positions in the country with one coaching a men's team and another umpiring international matches. There are other development issues for the sport that are ones facing the whole of Africa.

The association football tournament at the 2020 Summer Olympics will be held from 22 July to 8 August 2020 in Japan.
