Football has been part of the SEA Games sport since the 1959 edition. The women's football competition was held for the first time in 1985 in Thailand.
From the 2001 SEA Games to the 2015 SEA Games, the age limit for men's teams was under-23 plus up to three over-aged players for each squad.
Since the 2017 SEA Games, the age limit for men's teams is under-22. At the 2019 SEA Games, two over-aged players were allowed for each team.
Thailand and Vietnam are the only two nations have won both Gold medals of Men's and Women's tournament in a Southeast Asian Games.

The ASEAN Football Federation Championship, currently known as the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup for sponsorship reasons, is the primary association football tournament organized by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) for men's national teams in Southeast Asia.
The Indonesia national football team represents Indonesia in international football. They were the first Asian team to participate in the FIFA World Cup, particularly in the 1938 edition as the Dutch East Indies. The 6–0 loss to eventual finalists Hungary in the first round remains the nation's only appearance in the World Cup. Thus, Indonesia holds the World Cup record as the team with the fewest matches played (1) and one of the teams with the fewest goals scored (0).Indonesia is known as the king of runner-up when playing the AFF Championship final 6 times but never won it.
The Thailand national football team represents Thailand in senior international football and is controlled by the Football Association of Thailand.
The Malaysia national football team represents Malaysia in international football and is controlled by the Football Association of Malaysia. The national team is recognised by FIFA as the successor of the defunct Malaya national football team which was founded for the 1963 Merdeka Tournament one month before the institution of Malaysia. The team is officially nicknamed Harimau Malaya in reference to the Malayan Tiger. Ex- Malaysia's player Mokhtar Dahari is one of the top goal scorer in international history.

The association football tournament at the 2007 SEA Games was held from 1 to 14 December in Nakhon Ratchasima Province of Thailand. The men's tournament is played by U-23 national teams, while the women's tournament has no age limit.

The chess events at the 22nd Southeast Asian Games were held from 5 to 13 December 2003 at the Vân Đồn sports centre in District 4 of Ho Chi Minh City. This was the first time chess was contested for medals at the Southeast Asian Games. Medals were awarded in eight categories: men's and women's individual and team performances in the combined event held at classical time controls, men's and women's individual competitions at rapid time controls, and men's and women's team competitions at rapid time controls.
