The Gatton Student Center is a student activity center for meetings, conferences, meals, recreation, and shopping for students on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington, Kentucky. The building houses University of Kentucky's student service offices, as well as many dining and recreational facilities. The original building was constructed in 1938 and remodeled in 2018.

History

Before being renamed to "Gatton Student Center" in 2018, the original University of Kentucky's student center was completed in 1938; with renovation additions happening in 1963 and 1982. [1] Beginning in 2014, the University of Kentucky Student Center would undergo a series of remodels and expansions resulting in the Gatton Student Center, a US$200 million, 330,000 square foot building. [1] Construction of the Gatton Student Center was finalized in 2018, two years after its projected grand opening in 2016. [1] The original 1938 ballroom and Great Hall, which feature wrought-iron rails and decorations made by UK engineering students in the campus forge, are being preserved. They were designed by Architect Ernst Johnson; many other buildings designed by Johnson for the University have since been torn down and replaced. [2]

The most recent renovation to the building, beginning in 2014, The Gatton Student Center was designed by Omni Architects company and Perkins + Will. Foodservice design was provided by Tipton Associates, APAC. [3]

Naming of building

The Gatton Student Center is named after Bill Gatton, an American businessman who is an alumnus of the University of Kentucky. Gatton donated $20,000,000 to fund the project, hence why the building was named in his honor. [4]

Dining hall

Champions Kitchen is located on the first floor of the Gatton Student Center, which serves as a dining hall for students to purchase meals. Champion's Kitchen offers a 750-seat dining room with multiple entree options for students to choose from. [5] Champions Kitchen is one of two dining halls offered on campus; it serves those who live on the North side of the University of Kentucky.

Alumni Gym

Originally serving as the University of Kentuckys basketball court from 1924 to 1950, the Alumni Gym Fitness Center is now serving as a gym for students and faculty to use while on campus. [6] The original building was remodeled in 1937, as well as 1982. [6] Alumni Gym Fitness Center features over 200 pieces of exercise equipment. [1] The Alumni Gym Fitness Center serves as one of the two fitness centers located on campus; it is located on the North side of the University of Kentucky's campus.

Cats Den

The Cats Den, located on the first floor of the Gatton Student Center, is a designated area for students to socialize with one another. Open karaoke nights are offered on weekday nights. The space is often used during the day by students as a quiet area to do homework, study, or eat lunch away from the main areas of the building.

Barnes & Noble Book Store

The Gatton Student Center is home to the University of Kentucky Bookstore, a 30,000 sq. ft location where purchases of books and University of Kentucky apparel can be made. There is also an Apple Inc. store located inside of the building. The Barnes & Noble bookstore is located on the second floor, where other novelty books can be purchased. [7] The Barnes and Noble bookstore is functional and convenient for students to purchase books needed for classes at the University of Kentucky, as professors and teachers are able to directly submit to the bookstore the materials needed for his/her/their courses.

Apple Store

The Apple Inc. Store, located on the third floor of the Gatton Student Center, offers Apple technology to students at the Education discounted price. However, Only students and staff at the University of Kentucky are able to make purchases and must show a valid University of Kentucky ID.

University of Kentucky Bookstore

The Official University of Kentucky Bookstore makes its home in the Gatton Student Center offering official Wildcat gear, apparel, and gifts available to students and visitors of the University. [8]

Aurora University (AU) is a private university in Aurora, Illinois. Gatton College of Business and Economics is a college of the University of Kentucky. Gatton College educates more than 4,000 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing and supply chain management. Founded in 1925 as the College of Commerce, the college was created from the Department of Economics and was given full accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. Initially the college occupied a single room in White Hall. In 1995, the Board of Trustees renamed the college in honor of Mr. Carol Martin "Bill" Gatton, '54, in recognition of his $14 million pledge. The donation was the largest in the history of the university. The current dean is Simon J. Sheather. The college is located in central campus along South Limestone.

University of Michigan student housing

The campus housing system at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, referred to as University Housing, provides living accommodations for approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. There is no requirement for first-year students to live in University Housing, yet approximately 97% of incoming students choose to do so. Every year, over 9,500 undergraduate students are housed in 18 residence halls on Central Campus, the Hill Neighborhood, and North Campus. Undergraduates, graduate students, and students with families can live in University Housing apartments in the Northwood Community on North Campus. North Campus is a residential section of Cornell University's Ithaca, New York campus. It primarily houses freshmen. North Campus offers programs which ease the transition into college life for incoming freshmen. The campus offers interactions with faculty and other programs designed to increase interaction among members of the freshman class. North Campus is part of Cornell's residential initiative.

The main campus of Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia; the central campus is roughly bordered by Prices Fork Road to the northwest, Plantation Road to the west, Main Street to the east, and U.S. Route 460 bypass to the south, although it also has several thousand acres beyond the central campus. The Elon University campus is a 636-acre (2.57 km2) campus in Elon, North Carolina United States. The campus is mostly located along East Haggard Avenue between Manning Avenue and North Oak Avenue, and North Williamson Avenue between the railroad tracks and University Drive. There are other minor streets that travel through and into campus. The campus is about three miles (5 km) from Interstate 40/85 and abuts the city of Burlington.

Alumni Gymnasium, now known as Alumni Gym Fitness Center, is a building on the University of Kentucky (UK) campus in Lexington, Kentucky. It is located on the corner of South Limestone Street and Avenue of Champions next to the University of Kentucky Student Center. When it opened in 1924, replacing Alumni Hall, it was a 2,800 seat multi-purpose arena, serving as home to the UK Wildcats basketball team. It was replaced when the Memorial Coliseum opened in 1950. The building later became a student recreation facility, and was frequently used for recreational and intramural basketball. During this period, it was also home to the University of Kentucky Men's Club Basketball team, University of Kentucky Club Dodgeball team, and the UK Men's Club Volleyball team. The interior of the facility was gutted in 2017 as part of a project to renovate the university's student center, and the building reopened in 2018 as a student fitness center.

The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee at Waukesha is a two-year college located in Waukesha, in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. A campus of the University of Wisconsin Colleges, it is part of the University of Wisconsin System. Like the other UW Colleges' campuses, UW-Waukesha's land and buildings belong to a local government unit, in this case Waukesha County. As part of the local-state partnership, the University of Wisconsin provides faculty, staff, educational programs, technology, furnishings, libraries, and supplies. University Club (University of Pittsburgh) United States historic place

The University Club is an eight-story building of the University of Pittsburgh designed by Henry Hornbostel and completed in 1923 that is a contributing property to the Schenley Farms Historic District on the school's campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It serves as a faculty club with publicly accessible dining, banquet, and conference facilities, while the upper four floors serve as housing for the families of out-of-town hospital patients.

Elmo Natali Student Center

The Elmo Natali Student Center, commonly referred to as The Union, is the student union building centrally located on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania (CALU). Eastern Michigan University Student Center

In 2017 the Student Center was named the number one student union in the country by the College Rank. The building is located in University Park near the Rec/IM and Library. It is also the location of the EMU Bookstore, a 24/7 computer lab, two art galleries, various offices and Admissions. The Student Center also includes the Kiva Room.

Patterson Office Tower High-rise building on the University of Kentucky

The Patterson Office Tower is a 250-foot (76 m) high-rise building on the University of Kentucky (UK) campus in Lexington, Kentucky. It is UK's only current high-rise following the 2020 demolition of the Kirwan–Blanding residence hall complex, which had included two 264-foot (80 m) towers.
