Gorgadesia is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Roccellaceae. [2] A monotypic genus, it contains the single species Gorgadesia mira.
The genus name of Gorgadesia is derived from Gorgades, the ancient name of the Cabo Verde archipelago, the home of the mythological Gorgons. [3]
The genus was circumscribed by Carlos das Neves Tavares in Revista Biol. (Lisbon) vol.4 on page 132 in 1964.
Edward Tuckerman was an American botanist and professor who made significant contributions to the study of lichens and other alpine plants. He was a founding member of the Natural History Society of Boston and most of his career was spent at Amherst College. He did the majority of his collecting on the slopes of Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Tuckerman Ravine was named in his honor. The standard botanical author abbreviation Tuck. is applied to species he described.
Trentepohlia is a genus of filamentous chlorophyte green algae in the family Trentepohliaceae, living free on terrestrial supports such as tree trunks and wet rocks or symbiotically in lichens. The filaments of Trentepohlia have a strong orange colour caused by the presence of large quantities of carotenoid pigments which mask the green of the chlorophyll.
The Roccellaceae are a family of fungi in the order Arthoniomycetes. Most taxa are lichenized with green algae, although some are lichenicolous, growing on other lichens.
Herteliana is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Ramalinaceae.
Rolfidium is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Ramalinaceae.
Lopezaria is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Ramalinaceae.
Speerschneidera is a single-species genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Leprocaulaceae. The genus was circumscribed by Italian botanist Vittore Benedetto Antonio Trevisan de Saint-Léon in 1861, with Speerschneidera euploca as the type species. This lichen was originally described by Edward Tuckerman in 1858 as Physcia euploca. It is a crustose lichen found in the southern United States and Mexico.
Mobergia is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Physciaceae.
Follmanniella is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Roccellaceae. A monotypic genus, it contains the single species Follmanniella scutellata.
Streimannia is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Roccellaceae. A monotypic genus, it contains the single species Streimannia varieseptata. The genus was circumscribed by Göran Thor in Opera Bot. vol.103 on page 84 in 1990.
Claurouxia is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Lecanoraceae. This is a monotypic genus, containing the single species Claurouxia chalybeioides.
Chicita Frances Culberson was an American lichenologist.
Hertella is a lichenized genus of fungi within the Placynthiaceae family.
Farnoldia is a genus of lichenized fungi within the Lecideaceae family.
Koerberiella is a genus of lichenized fungi within the Lecideaceae family.
Imshaugia is a genus of seven species of foliose lichens in the family Parmeliaceae. They are commonly known as starburst lichens.
Burgella is a genus of fungi in the family Clavulinaceae. The genus is monotypic, containing the single species Burgella flavoparmeliae, described in 2007.
William Louis "Bill" Culberson was an American lichenologist.
David John Galloway, FRSNZ was a biochemist, botanist, and lichenologist.
Robert Lücking is a German lichenologist. He earned his master's and PhD from the University of Ulm, focusing on the taxonomy, ecology, and biodiversity of foliicolous lichens. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Mason E. Hale award for his doctoral thesis, the Augustin Pyramus de Candolle prize for his monograph, and the Tuckerman Award twice for his publications in The Bryologist. Since 2015, he has been serving as the curator of lichens, fungi, and bryophytes at the Berlin Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum, and several lichen species and a genus have been named in his honour.
