IHadCancer is a social support network for cancer fighters, survivors, and their supporters. [1] [2] Built by Squeaky Wheel Media, the site launched in July 2011. [1] IHadCancer was founded by Mailet Lopez and Anthony Del Monte and is located in Chelsea, Manhattan. [1]

In 2008, Mailet Lopez was diagnosed with breast cancer. [3] She decided to build a site focused on creating connections between people who can help one another in dealing with cancer through their unique experiences. [3] As co-founder of Squeaky Wheel Media, she used the company's experience in web development and design to produce IHadCancer.com. [4] [5] According to Mailet, the name, "I Had Cancer" stems from her personal battle with the disease and represents the importance of a positive attitude and "looking towards the future". [6]

In 2012, Squeaky Wheel Media won the Webby Award for the Community Category for the site IHadCancer. [7] The site went on to win two additional Webbys, both in 2015 and in 2016.[ citation needed ] Members can create personal profiles, invite others to their circle of friends and contribute to discussions. [8] They can browse the community section and search for others based on gender, age, location, type of cancer and treatment. [8]

Imerman Angels is a non-profit organization founded in the United States in 2006 that provides guidance and resources with an emphasis on one-on-one support for cancer fighters and caregivers. Jonny Imerman founded the organization after being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2003 and realizing the need for one-on-one mental support. Imerman Angels connects cancer patients with cancer survivors to provide support through their journey from having cancer to being cancer-free. Patients are connected with nearby mentors through a database of over 6,000 cancer survivors.
