The Islamic Center of Riverside is a mosque in Riverside, California. Built in 1979, [1] Friday services regularly attract over 1,000 worshipers. [2]

History

The mosque is a member of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California network of mosques. The building was erected in 1979–80 and designed by architect Shakil Patel. [3] The site, close to the University of California Riverside campus, was chosen to enable the mosque to serve university students as well as the wider community. [1] Along with 23 other "Islamic Centers" in California, the mosque has held an annual open house offering Californians an opportunity to learn more about Islam in the wake of the September 11 attacks. [1] [4] The mosque is known for its "interfaith efforts and welcoming atmosphere." [5]

The Islamic Center organizes an annual ceremony, held at the Riverside Convention Center. During the ceremony, all Muslims from the Inland Empire who are graduating from high schools or college are honored, and cash prizes are awarded to top students in several categories. [6] Members filled 50 cartons with relief supplies and raised over $15,000 for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. [7]

Mustafa H. Kuko became imam of the Center in 1998. [8] [9] At that time, only about 2% of those attending the Center were American-born; by 2012, about 15% were. [8] In June 2014, Kuko told The Press-Enterprise that the Center has worked hard to prevent young people from connecting with terrorist propaganda. He said that the press "overlooked what we have been doing in our communities for many years... We have been talking to our communities. We have been talking to our families." [10] On July 21, 2017, guest speaker Imam Mahmoud Harmoush delivered a speech at the Islamic Center of Riverside that drew controversy for allegations of anti-semitic rhetoric. Harmoush later claimed that his words had been misinterpreted by "politically-motivated people who fish in dirty water." [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

2015 San Bernardino attack

Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the shooters in the 2015 San Bernardino attack, and neighbor Enrique Marquez, who is currently under investigation in relation to the attack, attended prayers at the Islamic Center of Riverside along with one of the victims of the shooting. [9] [17] [18] [19] Farook and the other shooter Tashfeen Malik, who were married abroad, held their wedding reception at the Islamic Center of Riverside. [20] Farook abruptly stopped attending the center in 2014 following his marriage. [19] The Center's director did not recall ever hearing extremist ideology from Farook, and stated that if such ideas were known, they would have tried to stop it, as Farook's actions betrayed the principles of Islam. [21] The Islamic Center of Riverside held a prayer vigil on the Friday after the shooting, extending sympathy to the shooting victims and condemning the attack. [22] [23]

Baitul Hameed Mosque

The Baitul Hameed Mosque is the largest Ahmadiyya Muslim mosque in the Western United States with an area of 19,000 square feet (1,800 m2) sitting on nearly 5 acres (20,000 m2). Initially built in 1989 at a cost of $2.5 million, entirely from donations of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, it is located east of Los Angeles in Chino, California, just inside San Bernardino County. The San Gabriel Mountains provide a beautiful backdrop to this Spanish-inspired mosque with modern amenities. In 2003, an electrical fire caused heavy damage to the front building which was used for library and office space, as well as a kitchen. The affected areas were demolished, and rebuilt with a second story. In addition, a separate auxiliary hall was built adjacent to the existing Tahir Hall, for the exclusive use of Lajna Imaillah. The reconstructed mosque opened again for full use in August, 2009. A separate commercial kitchen and missionary residence/guest house are also on site. Plans are now underway for the construction of an NCAA sized basketball court with space allocated in the back lot.

2015 San Bernardino attack Mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, USA

On December 2, 2015, a terrorist attack, consisting of a mass shooting and an attempted bombing, occurred at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California. The perpetrators, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple living in the city of Redlands, targeted a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health training event and Christmas party of about 80 employees in a rented banquet room. 14 people were killed and 22 others were seriously injured. Farook was a U.S.-born citizen of Pakistani descent, who worked as a health department employee. Malik was a Pakistani-born green card holder.

Inland Regional Center Not-for-profit public benefit corporation operating in southeastern California

Inland Regional Center (IRC), formally Inland Counties Regional Center, Inc., is a government-funded not-for-profit public benefit corporation that provides services and programs to more than 33,000 people with developmental disabilities and their families in California's San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Its headquarters, which include a conference center, are located in San Bernardino; the Center also operates a branch office in Riverside. The Center is part of a statewide network of regional centers established by the state of California to provide these services under the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Act.

Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik American and Pakistani terrorists

Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik were the two perpetrators of a terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, on December 2, 2015. In the attack, they killed 14 people and injured 22 others. Both died in a shootout by law enforcement later that same day.

Ralph Kenneth Deleon is a Filipino, and legal permanent resident of the United States, who in 2015 was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder of members of the United States military and government, and providing material support for terrorists. Deleon is serving a 25-year sentence.

Teamsters Local 1932 is the largest union in the County of San Bernardino, representing 11,000 of the County's 25,000 employees. The union was founded by members of the independent San Bernardino Public Employees Association (SBPEA) after a vote to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in April 2015.
