Abdulrasheed Bello (born 4 April 1977, Kano) known professionally as Skillz or JJC Skillz is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer and television producer. [1]

JJC Skillz earned recognition in Nigeria after the release of one of his single, "We Are Africans," an afrobeats anthem. [2] Prior to the success of "We are Africans," Skillz was producer for the British hip-hop record company and musical group Big Brovaz. [3] In December 2002, he released his debut album, Atide, an experimental album with lyrics in English and Nigerian languages and influenced by hip hop, African and salsa musical styles. [4]

He co-produced with his ex-wife Funke Akindele Industreet, a television show about the Nigerian music industry. [5]

Career

Bello was born in Kano and left Nigeria for U.K. when he was fourteen years old. He developed interest and appreciation of music; listening to his father's country music records and juju music. In U.K., he was drawn to hip-hop music and soon formed a musical group with a friend, thereafter they began performing at talent shows. [6] His stage name, JJC means Johnny just come, a term used by Nigerians to describe naive new arrivals to the city. [6] Bello's first major producing project was co-founding Big Brovas records and Big Brovas collective. In 2004, he released Atide, his debut album with 419 squad. His producing credits include Weird MC's Ijoya, Pu Yanga by Tillaman, and Morile by Buoqui. [7]

He also came to the African music scene creating projects like Afropean (Afro-European fusion) and Afrobeats. [8]

In 2013, he won the best international artist at the Nigerian entertainment award. He created an African super group called the JJC and the 419 squad. This group won the Kora All African music award in 2014. [8]

Personal life

Prior to his marriage to Akindele, Bello fathered three children from three different mothers. [9] He married Funke Akindele in 2016. [10] [11] In 2018,the couple gave birth to a set of twins. [12]

In June 2022, Bello announced on his Instagram that the couple had decided to pursue their lives separately. [13]

The music producer secretly married an Ebira bride in Kano state in March 2023. [14]

Afrobeats is an umbrella term to describe popular music from West Africa and the diaspora that initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK in the 2000s and 2010s. <i>Omo Ghetto: The Saga</i> 2020 Nigerian comedy film

Omo Ghetto: The Saga also known as Omo Ghetto 2 is a 2020 Nigerian gangster comedy film co-directed by Funke Akindele and JJC Skillz. The film stars Funke Akindele, Chioma Akpota, Nancy Isime, Eniola Badmus, Bimbo Thomas, Deyemi Okanlawon and Mercy Aigbe in the lead roles. This was the second film in the Omo Ghetto franchise and it was also the sequel to the 2010 trilogy film Omo Ghetto. The film had its theatrical release coinciding with Christmas on 25 December 2020 and was opened to extremely positive reviews from critics. The film became a box office success and surpassed Fate of Alakada as the highest grossing Nigerian film for the year 2020. As of 26 January 2021, when the film grossed ₦468 million at the box office it surpassed the record of 2016 film The Wedding Party to become the highest ever grossing film in the Nigerian film industry.

My Siblings and I is a 2018 Nigerian comedy series, produced by Funke Akindele and co-directed by JJC Skillz and Olasunkanmi Adebayo, the Series is based on the life of the Aberuagba family depicted as an extended family made up of the parents, Solomon who is a retired army brigadier general and his wife Rosemary who is a teacher in the series. It is now in its 4th season from the first season which was premiered on the 6th of August 2018 and still ongoing.

Far From Home is a 2022 young adult home series produced by Netflix also doubles as first Netflix Nigerian young adult TV series. The series written by Dami Elebe and produced by Inkblot productions premiered on Netflix on 16 December 2022. The five-part series stars Mike Afolarin, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Bimbo Akintola, Carol King, Adesua Etomi, Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, Genoveva Umeh, Natse Jemide and a host of others.

She Must Be Obeyed is a 2023 Amazon Prime Video miniseries that premiered on September 29, 2023. The five-part series features Funke Akindele, Nancy Isime, Lateef Adedimeji, Akah Nnani, Patience Ozokwor, Mike Ezuronye, Ex BBNaija star, Veeiye, Waje and other Nollywood stars. The mini-series was produced and directed by Funke Akindele and her estranged husband JJC Skillz under the Scene one Productions.
