Jordi Casamitjana (born 1964) is a vegan, zoologist, [1] [2] animal protection campaigner, and animal rights activist. [3]

Biography

Casamitjana was born in Catalonia in 1964 but is a British citizen living in the UK since 1993. He identifies as an ethical vegan. [4] In April 2018, he was fired from the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) after he disclosed to his colleagues that it was investing in firms related to animal testing. Casamitjana claimed that LACS's decision to fire him was based on his ethical vegan belief. [5] LACS said it was because of gross misconduct. He took legal action against LACS, which ended in an out-of-court settlement in his favour. [6] The landmark case confirmed that ethical veganism is protected under the Equality Act of 2010 in the UK as a philosophical belief. [7] This was the first time the specific belief of ethical veganism had been legally recognised and protected in any jurisdiction in the world. [8] [9] He is also the author of the book Ethical Vegan: a Personal and Political Journey to Change the World. [10]

Casamitjana has worked as a freelance animal protection consultant, [11] undercover investigator [4] [12] and writer, [13] [14] and as an employee of campaign departments of several animal protection organisations, including the Monkey Sanctuary (Wild Futures), [15] the Born Free Foundation, [16] the League Against Cruel Sports, [17] [18] CAS International, [19] the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), [20] and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) UK. [21]

He was heavily involved with the first successful prosecutions under the Hunting Act 2004 [12] and in the ban on bullfighting in Catalonia. [22]

<i>Polistes annularis</i> Species of wasp

Polistes annularis is a species of paper wasp found throughout the eastern half of the United States. This species of red paper wasp is known for its large size and its red-and-black coloration and is variably referred to as a ringed paper wasp or jack Spaniard wasp. It builds its nest under overhangs near bodies of water that minimize the amount of sunlight penetration. It clusters its nests together in large aggregations, and consumes nectar and other insects. Its principal predator is the ant, although birds are also known to prey on it. Unlike other wasps, P. annularis is relatively robust in winter conditions, and has also been observed to store honey in advance of hibernation. This species has also been used as a model species to demonstrate the ability to use microsatellite markers in maternity assignment of social insects.

<i>Polistes fuscatus</i> Species of insect

Polistes fuscatus, whose common name is the dark or northern paper wasp, is widely found in eastern North America, from southern Canada through the southern United States. It often nests around human development. However, it greatly prefers areas in which wood is readily available for use as nest material, therefore they are also found near and in woodlands and savannas. P. fuscatus is a social wasp that is part of a complex society based around a single dominant foundress along with other cofoundresses and a dominance hierarchy.

Polistes carolina is one of two species of red paper wasp found in the eastern United States and is noted for the finer ridges on its propodeum. It is a social wasp in the family Vespidae and subfamily Polistinae. The species is native to the United States from Texas to Florida, north to New York, and west to Nebraska. The wasp's common name is due to the reddish-brown color of its head and body. P. carolina prefer to build their nests in protected spaces.

Vegaphobia, vegephobia or veganophobia is an aversion to, or dislike of, vegetarians and vegans. The term first appeared in the 2010s, coinciding with the rise in veganism in the late 2010s. Several studies have found an incidence of vegaphobic sentiments in the general population. Positive feelings regarding vegetarians and vegans also exist. Because of their diet, others may perceive them as more virtuous or principled.
