Paavo Johannes Nurmi was a Finnish middle-distance and long-distance runner. He was called the "Flying Finn" or the "Phantom Finn", as he dominated distance running in the 1920s. Nurmi set 22 official world records at distances between 1500 metres and 20 kilometres, and won nine gold and three silver medals in his 12 events in the Summer Olympic Games. At his peak, Nurmi was undefeated for 121 races at distances from 800 m upwards. Throughout his 14-year career, he remained unbeaten in cross country events and the 10,000 metres.

He was, for 19 years, the world record holder for 3000 metre steeplechase. He is a two time World Champion in the event. His older brother Abraham Cherono is also a steeplechase runner.

Bouabdallah "Bob" Tahri is a retired middle-distance and long-distance French runner, who was born in Metz. He competed mainly in the 3000 m steeplechase distance. He also competes in the 2000 m steeplechase, 1500 m, mile, 3000 m, 5000 m, 10000 m and cross-country running. He has won several medals at major international championships such as the World Championships, European Championships and the European Indoor Championships. Moreover, he has won medals in the European Cup, European Team Championships, IAAF World Cup, IAAF Continental Cup and the IAAF World Athletics Final.
Christian Belz is a Swiss long-distance runner. He was initially a steeplechaser and represented Switzerland in the event at the World Championships in Athletics in 1999 and 2001 as well as the 2000 Summer Olympics. He broke the national record with a run of 8:22.24 in June 2001. Later that year he won two bronze medals at the 2001 Summer Universiade.
Brian Lee Diemer is a former American track and field athlete, who mainly competed in the 3000 metre steeplechase during his career. He was high school state champion in the mile while running at South Christian High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1983 after taking third in the 2 mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in nearby Detroit. He won the outdoor 1983 NCAA 3000m Steeplechase in a time of 8:26.95.
Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad is a retired French professional middle-distance runner of Algerian descent who mainly competed in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He is the only man to win three Olympic steeplechase medals, claiming silver in 2008 and 2012 and bronze in 2016. He also won two bronze medals at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in 2011 and 2013. Mekhissi-Benabbad earned titles at five consecutive editions of the European Athletics Championships between 2010 and 2018.
Tommy Uolevi Ekblom is a retired long-distance runner from Finland. He twice competed for his native country at the Summer Olympics in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase. Ekblom set his personal best (8.19.40) in that event in 1983. He also coached Jukka Keskisalo, another Finnish steeplechaser, who became the European Champion in 2006.
Risto Ilmari Ulmala is a Finnish former long-distance runner. Risto Ulmala's best achievement was 7th place in 5000 meters at World Championships 1991. In European Athletics Championships he was 6th in 5000 meters 1990 and 7th in 1994. After his track running career he competed in road races and marathons in the United States. He was 13th in New York City Marathon 1995 and participated in Olympic marathon 1996.
The Men's 3.000 metres Steeplechase at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany, on August 16 and August 18, 2009. Keeping in line with previous major championships success, the four-man Kenyan team entered for the event contained a number of race favourites.
Evan Reese Jager is an American distance runner. He won the silver medal in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. Jager is the current NACAC area record holder in the event with a time of 8:00.45, which makes him the 16th fastest performer in its history. He is sponsored by Nike and is coached by Jerry Schumacher in the Bowerman Track Club.

Juha Matti Ahokas is a retired amateur Finnish Greco-Roman wrestler, who competed in the men's super heavyweight category. Ahokas has won thirty Finnish championship titles, collected four medals at the European Championships, and also represented his nation Finland in four editions of the Olympic Games. Throughout his sporting career, Ahokas trained for Nurmon Jymy Wrestling Club in Seinäjoki under his father and personal coach Risto Ahokas.
Jonathan Muia Ndiku is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He has a personal best of 8:07.75 minutes. He was the gold medallist in the event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, where he broke the Commonwealth Games record.
Hailemariyam Amare Tegegn is an Ethiopian runner specialising in the 3000 metres steeplechase. Hailemariyam placed 5th in the 2014 World Junior Championships. He represented his country at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing finishing twelfth in the final. He won a bronze medal at the 2015 African Games. He participated at the 2016 Summer Olympics but failed to reach the final. In 2022, he set a personal best time of 8:06.29 to finish 3rd at the Meeting International Mohammed VI d'Athletisme de Rabat. Later that year, he won the 3000 metres steeplechase and 5000 metres at the African Championships. He competed at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, reaching the 3000m steeplechase final and placing 10th. He was 8th at the 2022 Diamond League Final in Zurich.
Hillary Bor is a Kenyan-born American track and field athlete. He qualified for the 2016 Olympics by finishing in second place in the 3000 meters steeplechase at the 2016 United States Olympic Trials.
Ismo Tenho Tapio Toukonen is a retired Finnish runner who specialized in the 3000 metres steeplechase.
Getnet Wale Bayabl is an Ethiopian runner specialising in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He finished fourth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as well as at the 2019 and 2022 World Athletics Championships. Wale won the silver medal at the 2019 African Games and a bronze at the 2018 African Championships in Athletics.
