Kent County News is a weekly newspaper published in Chestertown, Maryland. The paper is published once a week on Thursday. [1] The first publication was in 1947, but the paper can be traced back to the Chestertown Spy which was established in 1793. [1] It is one of the nation's oldest newspapers. [2] The paper serves Kent County and the city of Chestertown on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

The newspaper was previously part of Chesapeake Publishing, a division of American Consolidated Media. [1] In March 2014, the division was sold to Adams Publishing Group. This paper is a part of APG Media of Chesapeake. [3] Kent County News is one of 34 publications across Maryland and Delaware published by APG Media of Chesapeake. [4]

The newspaper is published at 223 High Street Chestertown, Maryland, 21620, [2] and has an estimated weekly circulation of 8,800. [1]

History

Kent County News has been serving Kent County since 1793. [3] Kent County News officially began its publication in 1947, but was originally known as the Chestertown Spy which began in 1793. [1] The original Chestertown Spy was locally owned and reported on the daily activity in and around Chestertown. The Chestertown Spy was rebooted in 2009, but does not consider itself a newspaper. [5]

In 2007, Kent County News was owned and published by Chesapeake Publishing, a section of American Consolidated Media. [1] The paper remained under ACM until March 2014 when it was sold to Adams Publishing Group. [6] At the time of the sale, David Fike, the president and publisher of the Chesapeake group, said that he was "thrilled ... to be moving back to a family owned company" with "diversified resources and opportunities". [6]

APG consists of four regions; Kent County News is a part of APG Media of Chesapeake. [7] The Chesapeake Publishing Group publishes six newspapers and five free distribution products. [8] It is located in Easton, Maryland, and the publishing corporation employs about 580 people. [9]

Coverage

The paper is published weekly, and there are daily online updates. [7] It is published every Thursday, except holidays. [3]

Kent County News covers the local news in Chestertown and surrounding areas. The paper reports on sports, opinions, school news, obituaries, real estate, and community arts and celebrations. [10]

Awards and recognition

In April 2009, staff photographer Charlie Campbell won first-place for a photo from the scene of a tractor-trailer crash from the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association (MDDC Press Association) in the category of spot news photo . That same year, editor Kevin Hemstock won first place in the editorial category, for a piece called "Gansler's Bay Audit Got Off to a Bad Start". Staff writer Peter Heck also took a first place award that year in the environment category for his report titled "Biodiesel Plant is Proposed for Kent". [11]

Trish McGee, deputy and sports editor of the Kent County News, was named the best of all columnists in Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. in May 2013. She received the best in show ”honor by MDDC Press Association for her article "Honoring an Orioles Legend" on Brooks Robinson. [12]

In 2017, the entire editorial staff of the paper was honored by the MDDC Press Association for excellence in journalism and their news reporting in 2016. [13] Editor Daniel Divilio received first place for education reporting in the circulation category for his article "School Funding Woes: How We Got to This Point. [13] Trish McGee won first place for the feature story (non-profile) category for her piece "Kent County Salutes its Vietnam Veterans". McGee also won first for "10 Years Later, Cataldo Has a Geart of a Champion", a sports feature story. [13]

In 2018, the full editorial staff received honors again from the MDDC Press Association for their reporting in 2017. Editor Divilio received first place for education reporting in the circulation division for his article titled "Angry Parents Voice Issues with School Buses". [14] McGee and Schenke received second place awards for articles. [15]

Maryland Route 213 (MD 213) is a 68.25-mile (109.84 km) state highway located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the United States. The route runs from MD 662 in Wye Mills, Queen Anne's County, north to the Pennsylvania border in Cecil County, where the road continues into that state as Pennsylvania Route 841 (PA 841). The route, which is a two-lane undivided highway most of its length, passes through mainly rural areas as well as the towns of Centreville, Chestertown, Galena, Cecilton, Chesapeake City, and Elkton. MD 213 intersects many routes including U.S. Route 50 (US 50) near Wye Mills, US 301 near Centreville, and US 40 in Elkton. The Chestertown Tea Party was a protest against British excise duties which, according to local legend, took place in May 1774 in Chestertown, Maryland as a response to the British Tea Act. Chestertown tradition holds that, following the example of the more famous Boston Tea Party, colonial patriots boarded the brigantine Geddes in broad daylight and threw its cargo of tea into the Chester River. The event is celebrated each Memorial Day weekend with a festival and historic reenactment called the Chestertown Tea Party Festival.

Maryland Route 20 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The highway runs 13.77 miles (22.16 km) from Beach Road and Lawton Avenue in Rock Hall east to MD 291 in Chestertown. MD 20 connects Chestertown with several villages in western Kent County, including Fairlee. The highway was designated one of the original state roads to be improved by the Maryland State Roads Commission in 1909 and was built between the mid-1910s and early 1920s. MD 20 was widened in the late 1940s and received bypasses of Fairlee and in Rock Hall in the mid-1950s and late 1950s, respectively. The highway was removed from the center of Chestertown in the mid-1980s.

Worton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Kent County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 249.

The Sergeant First Class John H. Newnam Armory, also known as the Chestertown Armory, is a historic National Guard armory built in 1931 and located in Chestertown, Kent County, Maryland, United States. From 1933 until 2005 it housed various formations from the Maryland Army National Guard. It also was the home of sporting and community events during this time. After the 115th Infantry Regiment was merged into the 175th Infantry Regiment in 2005, the armory was declared to be surplus by the state of Maryland. The Chestertown Armory was transferred to Washington College in 2013. Since then, it has stood vacant. The college is investigating the possibility of turning it into a bed and breakfast.

The Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience is an institute at Washington College, in Chestertown, Maryland, that promotes the research and study of American history and culture. Founded in 2000, the Starr Center at Washington College is one of many educational initiatives funded by the Starr Foundation, a private foundation with assets of over $1.25 billion. The inaugural director of the Starr Center, Edward L. Widmer, served under Bill Clinton as special assistant to the president for national security affairs; among other accomplishments, he wrote foreign policy speeches and advised the president on topics related to history and scholarship as senior advisor to the president for special projects. Since 2006, Adam Goodheart, a historian, journalist and author of 1861: The Civil War Awakening, has served as director of the Center. In addition to its academic components, the C.V. Starr Center works closely with external groups to sponsor events of public interest, such as the Poplar Grove Project, a recovery and recordation project in collaboration with the Maryland State Archives, and hosts readings and lectures often focused on topics of local interest, such as Chesapeake Bay history.

Butlertown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kent County, Maryland, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 520.

Kent County High School (KCHS) is a public school located in Worton, Maryland in Kent County. It is the only high school within Kent County, is part of the Kent County Public Schools district, and serves students from ninth through twelfth grades. Trojans are the school mascot and the school colors are blue and gold. The student body is 2/3 white.
