National Geographic is an American magazine that is noted for its cover stories and accompanying photography. [1] [2] [3] Throughout the 2010s National Geographic's cover stories showcased global historical events such as the American Civil War [4] and humanities treks to Mars. [5] Cover stories included articles written by notable writers such as Tina Rosenberg, [6] Charles C. Mann [7] and Robert Draper. [8] Cover photos were published by notable photographers such as Martin Schoeller, [9] Aaron Huey [10] and Stephanie Sinclair. [11]

Contents

The 2010s saw articles written and photographed at locations around the globe featuring wildlife like the January 2018 issue titled "Why Birds Matter", written by Jonathan Franzen with a photo on the cover of a Secretarybird, photographed by Joel Sartore. [12] Articles featured on the cover of the magazine also included human-interest stories such as "Last Tribes of the Amazon", written by Scott Wallace and Chris Fagon with photography by Charlie Hamilton James featuring a child of an Amazon tribe in the October 2018 issue. [13] Many geographical locations were featured including western South America in the April 2011 article "The Genius of the Inca", written by Heather Pringle with photographs by Dylan Cole. [14]

Pope Callixtus I, also called Callistus I, was the bishop of Rome from c. 218 to his death c. 222 or 223. He lived during the reigns of the Roman emperors Elagabalus and Alexander Severus. Eusebius and the Liberian catalogue list his episcopate as having lasted five years (217–222). The Achaean League was a Hellenistic-era confederation of Greek city states on the northern and central Peloponnese. The league was named after the region of Achaea in the northwestern Peloponnese, which formed its original core. The first league was formed in the fifth century BC. The second Achaean League was established in 280 BC. As a rival of Antigonid Macedon and an ally of Rome, the league played a major role in the expansion of the Roman Republic into Greece. This process eventually led to the League's conquest and dissolution by the Romans in 146 BC.

Japan has a nationwide system of national highways distinct from the expressways. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and other government agencies administer the national highways. Beginning in 1952, Japan classified these as Class 1 or Class 2. Class 1 highways had one- or two-digit numbers, while Class 2 highways had three-digit numbers. For example, routes 1 and 57 were Class 1 highways while 507 was a Class 2 highway.

This is a list of volumes of U.S. Reports, and the links point to the contents of each individual volume. Each volume was edited by one of the Reporters of Decisions of the Supreme Court. As of the beginning of the October 2019 Term, there were 574 bound volumes of the U.S. Reports. There were another 14 volumes worth of opinions available as "slip opinions", which are preliminary versions of the opinion published on the Supreme Court's website.

The second Mandala of the Rigveda has 43 hymns, mainly to Agni and Indra chiefly attributed to the Rishi gṛtsamada śaunohotra. It is one of the "family books", the oldest core of the Rigveda, which were composed in early vedic period.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Second Battle of Simtokha Dzong</span> Military confrontation between Bhutan and Tibet

The Second Tibetan Invasion of Bhutan or the Second Battle of Simtokha Dzong was a military confrontation in 1634 between the supporters of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and the forces of the Tibetan Tsangpa dynasty and several Bhutanese lamas allied against him. The latter initially conquered Zhabdrung's seat, Simtokha Dzong, threatening to eliminate his young dominion. The castle's ammunition stores were accidentally ignited during the battle, however, resulting in an explosion that destroyed Simtokha Dzong and much of the Tibetan army. Seizing this chance, Zhabdrung's followers rallied and ousted the Tibetans from their territory, turning the battle into a decisive strategic victory of Ngawang Namgyal, paving the way for the Unification of Bhutan under his rule.

Brian Skerry is an American photojournalist and film producer specializing in marine life and ocean environments. Since 1998 he has been a contributing photographer for National Geographic magazine with more than 30 stories to his credit, including 6 covers. In 2021 Skerry won a Primetime Emmy Award for his role as producer in the miniseries, Secrets of the Whales.

Parker Otto Ackley was an American gunsmith, barrel maker, author, columnist, and wildcat cartridge developer. The Ackley Improved family of wildcat cartridges are designed to be easily made by rechambering existing firearms, and fireforming the ammunition to decrease body taper and increase shoulder angle, resulting in a higher case capacity. Ackley improved not only standard cartridges, but also other popular wildcats, and was the first to create a .17 caliber (4.5 mm) centerfire cartridge.
