List of largest container shipping companies

This is a list of the 30 largest container shipping companies as of February 2024, according to Alphaliner, ranked in order of the twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) capacity of their fleet. [1] In January 2022, MSC overtook Maersk for the container line with the largest shipping capacity for the first time since 1996. [2] Hanjin Shipping was also one of the biggest but it is now defunct. [3]

CMA CGM is a French shipping and logistics company founded in 1978 by Jacques Saadé. It is the third largest container shipping company in the world, with a presence in 160 countries through 400 offices, 750 warehouses, 155,000 employees and a wide fleet of 593 vessels. CMA CGM serves 420 of the world’s 521 commercial ports and operates 257 shipping lines. The company is headquartered in Marseille, France. The name is an acronym of two predecessor companies, Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement (CMA) and Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM), which translate as "Maritime Freighting Company" and "General Maritime Company".

Orient Overseas Container Line, commonly known as OOCL, is a container shipping and logistics service company with headquarters in Hong Kong. The company is incorporated in Hong Kong as Orient Overseas Container Line Limited and separately incorporated as Orient Overseas Container Line Inc. in Liberia. The latter was also re-domiciled to the Marshall Islands.

Hanjin Shipping Co., Ltd. was a South Korean integrated logistics and container transport company. Hanjin was declared bankrupt by South Korean courts on 17 February 2017. Prior to its liquidation, Hanjin Shipping was South Korea's largest container line and one of the world's top ten container carriers in terms of capacity.

P&O Nedlloyd Container Line Limited was an Anglo-Dutch worldwide ocean-going container shipping line, with dual headquarters in London and Rotterdam. The company was formed in 1997 by the merger of the container-shipping interests of Dutch transportation company Royal Nedlloyd and the British maritime shipping giant P&O Group.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shipping industry of China</span>

In 1961 China established a state-run maritime shipping company and subsequently signed shipping agreements with many countries, laying the foundation for developing the country's ocean transport. That organization developed into the present-day China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO). The Chinese government also invested heavily in water transport infrastructure, constructing new ports and rebuilding and enlarging older facilities.

<i>MSC Daniela</i>

MSC Daniela is the lead ship of her class of container ship operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company that at 366 metres is one of the largest container ships of the world, with a twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) cargo capacity of 14,000 containers. The building of MSC Daniela was started on 1 July 2006 and finished at the end of 2008; the ship was subsequently crowned as the largest according to cargo capacity. The shipbuilder was Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje, South Korea.

International Transportation Service (ITS) is an American container terminal company that deals with the receipt and shipment of containerized cargo in domestic and foreign trade. It also focuses on marine cargo handling, vessel stevedoring, on-dock rail, and staffing services. ITS was founded and owned by K Line until 2020. International Transportation Service serves worldwide.

Maersk Line is a Danish international container shipping company and the largest operating subsidiary of Maersk, a Danish business conglomerate. Founded in 1928, it is the world's second largest container shipping company by both fleet size and cargo capacity, offering regular services to 374 ports in 116 countries. In 2019, it employed 83,625 people where 18,398 of which are vessel crew and the other 65,227 are processing and operations personnel in offices and ports. Maersk Line operates over 708 vessels and has a total capacity of about 4.1 million TEU.

<i>CSCL Globe</i> Container ship

CSCL Globe is a container ship owned and operated by COSCO Shipping and previously, China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL). The first of a class of five ships intended for Asia-Europe trade routes, she was the largest container ship in the world at the time of her launch in November 2014, with a maximum capacity of 19,100 twenty-foot containers.

China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited, abbreviated as COSCO Shipping, is a Chinese state-owned multinational conglomerate headquartered in Shanghai. The Transpacific Stabilization Agreement (TSA) is a research and discussion forum used by 15 of the main container shipping lines which carry cargo between Asia and the United States. The agreement operates differently and has different membership for eastbound and westbound carriage. U.S. authorization falls under the oversight of the Federal Maritime Commission.

<i>Hanjin Sooho</i>-class container ship Container ship class

The Hanjin Sooho class is a series of 9 container ships built for the now defunct Hanjin Shipping. The ships were built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. The ships have a maximum theoretical capacity of around 13,102 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

COSCO SHIPPING Lines Co., Ltd. is a Chinese international container transportation and shipping company. It is a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Holdings, and its parent company is China's state-owned COSCO Shipping.
