Florio is a contributor to NBC's Sunday night NFL studio show Football Night in America and appears in the Sunday Night Football digital postgame show. Additionally he appears with Peter King during halftime of NBC's coverage of Notre Dame football to discuss timely NFL topics. [3] He is the author of Playmakers: How the NFL Really Works (And Doesn't), a book released in March 2022. [4]

Early life

He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a metallurgical engineering degree and one in "engineering and public policy" [6] and from West Virginia University's law school in 1991. [7]

Sportswriter career

Florio began his sportswriting for a now-defunct site called NFLtalk.com in June 2000. The site was then bought out by ESPN.com, where Florio continued to write a rumor and news report. He worked for ESPN.com for six months. [5]

On November 1, 2001, Florio created the website and blog Profootballtalk.com, which focuses on the National Football League. [8] Florio, 36 at the time, began Profootballtalk.com as a sideline to practicing labor law in Clarksburg, West Virginia.

On June 14, 2009, it was announced that Profootballtalk.com would become an affiliate of NBC Sports, which would hold exclusive rights to Profootballtalk (PFT) content although Florio would retain ownership in a revenue-sharing deal. [9]

After becoming a partner with NBC, Florio began contributing to NBC Sports' television coverage, including Football Night in America. [10]

In June 2020, disparaging comments Florio had made about the LGBT community and derogatory comments he made about the disabled community in PFT articles in 2005 [11] and 2006 [12] [13] [14] came to light. These comments included the use of derogatory terms such as "homos", "fruits", "queers" and "fudge packers". Florio issued an apology for these comments on June 26, 2020. [15]

Personal life

Florio is married to Jill Florio; [16] they have a son named Alex. They live in Bridgeport, West Virginia. [5] [17] Florio previously practiced law for 18 years [18] [19] and is a fan of the Minnesota Vikings. [18]

The 2012 Oakland Raiders season was the franchise's 43rd season in the National Football League (NFL) and the 53rd overall. It was the first season under head coach Dennis Allen, who replaced Hue Jackson, who was fired one week after the 2011 season ended. It was also the first full season without the ownership of longtime owner Al Davis, who died on October 8, 2011, and the first season with a non-Davis family member as the general manager since 1972, as Reggie McKenzie was hired from the Green Bay Packers' organization by Al Davis' son Mark on January 10 to be the general manager of the team, and was given full autonomy over the football operations. McKenzie fired Jackson on his first day and hired Allen 2 weeks later. The Raiders failed to improve on their 8–8 record in 2011, securing them into their tenth consecutive non-winning season and the tenth consecutive elimination from postseason contention. The Raiders also clinched their divisional rank, securing their fifth consecutive season since 2007 which they finished third or fourth. This was also the first time since the 2009 NFL season that the team finished with a record below 8-8. The team did however upset the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom they also defeated in the 2006 NFL season, when the Raiders finished the year 2–14 and claimed the first overall pick in the draft.

The 2017 Tennessee Titans season was the franchise's 48th season in the National Football League and the 58th overall. It also marked the franchise's 21st season in the state of Tennessee as well as the second full season under head coach Mike Mularkey. They equaled their record from a year ago, and not only that, with a 15–10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17, they clinched their first playoff berth since 2008. In the first round, the Titans rallied from a 21–3 halftime deficit against the Chiefs to win 22–21, winning their first playoff game since 2003. However, they were defeated by the New England Patriots in the divisional round by the score of 35–14. Despite making the playoffs and winning a playoff game, this would be Mularkey's final year coaching the Titans, as they parted ways after the season ended.
