Miss Universe 2024 will be the 73rd Miss Universe pageant. It will be held in Mexico for the first time since the country last hosted in 2007. [1] [2] Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua will crown her successor at the end of the event.
On 18 November 2023, during the Miss Universe 2023 pageant, businessman Raúl Rocha Cantú announced via a video presentation that the 73rd edition will be held in Mexico. [3]
In September 2023, during the Tanner Fletcher show at New York Fashion Week, Miss Universe 2022 R'Bonney Gabriel revealed that the Miss Universe Organization had made the decision to remove age restrictions for contestants over the age of 18, which would be implemented starting with the 2024 edition. Prior to this change, the pageant had restricted participation to women between ages 18–28 on the year of the pageant, outside of special circumstances. [lower-alpha 1] [5] [6]
This edition will mark the debut of Belarus, Eritrea, Iran [lower-alpha 2] , Mayotte, North Macedonia, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan; [7] [8] and the returns of Armenia, Bangladesh, Belize, Bonaire, Botswana, China, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo [lower-alpha 3] , Estonia, Gibraltar, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Martinique, Montenegro, New Zealand, Romania, Samoa, Senegal, Serbia, Suriname, Tanzania, Turkey, Turks and Caicos, the United States Virgin Islands, and Uruguay. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] Cuba last competed in 1967, which will be the country's first time to compete after an absence of almost six decades from the competition, Martinique in 1984; the Democratic Republic of the Congo as Zaire and Samoa as Western Samoa in 1986; Senegal in 1987; Gibraltar in 1990; Bonaire and Suriname in 1999; Botswana and Estonia in 2013; Turks and Caicos in 2014; Montenegro and Serbia in 2015; Bangladesh, New Zealand, Tanzania, and the United States Virgin Islands in 2019; Kenya and Romania in 2021; while the others last competed in 2022.
