History

Newbridge Silverware was founded in 1934 as a homeware manufacturer. [1] It is based in Newbridge, County Kildare. [1]

In 1993, William Doyle took over as chief executive after his father, Dominic, died. [3] Under Doyle the company expanded its product lines to include jewellery. [3]

In 2007, the Museum of Style Icons was established at the Newbridge store and contains pieces of fashion history, including the hot pink cocktail dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. [1] [4] The museum also contains clothing and other memoribilia associated with Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Betty White, Tippi Hedren and Princess Diana. [5] [6] In 2014, the company reported sales of €21.5 million. [3]

Newbridge Silverware brand ambassadors have included Yasmin Le Bon, Sophie Dahl, Ronan O'Gara, Rob Kearney, Rozanna Purcell, Amy Huberman and Naomi Campbell, among others. [7] [8]

Newbridge, officially known by its Irish name Droichead Nua, is a town in County Kildare, Ireland. While the nearby Great Connell Priory was founded in the 13th century, the town itself formed from the 18th century onwards, and grew rapidly alongside a military barracks which opened in the early 19th century. Taking on the name Newbridge in the 20th century, the town expanded to support the local catchment, and also as a commuter town for Dublin. The Wrens of the Curragh were a community of women in nineteenth-century Ireland who lived outside society on the plains of Kildare, many of whom were sex workers at Curragh Camp. Records date back to the 1840s of women living on the Curragh nearby the army camp. Many of the women were orphans because of the Great Famine, resulting in them using prostitution to provide for themselves. The women developed a lifestyle in which money, homes, belongings, food, and childcare were shared. The community of women was originally covered by Charles Dickens in his journal, later being covered in novels, a poem, music, a podcast, and art.
