Madagascar sovereign island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. [1] The Island of Madagascar is the fourth-largest island in the world, and is home to 5% of the world's plant and animal species, of which more than 80% are endemic to Madagascar. [2] They include the lemur superfamily of primates, the carnivorous fossa, three bird families and six baobab species.

The territory is geographically part of the Comoro Islands, but has been politically separate since the 1970s. The territory is also known as Mahoré, the native name of its main island, especially by advocates of its inclusion in the Union of Comoros.
